I bought our 5th gen because I traded in my 98 for a tundra and missed it, the wife was not happy with her Highlander so I capitalized and got a new one 2013. Personally I think they look similar in the more square body to the 98 3rd gen body style.
Also we needed something to take to the snow and still had room for the kids with a 3rd row for kids friends or our two pit bulls. The Highlander wasn't going to cut it when it came to off road snow trips. new adventures
