Why did you pick the T4R over the FJ or Wrangler Unlimited?

I sold my 2008 Wrangler Unlimited (2.5" lift, 35" tires etc) and put down a deposit for a Super White ORP that should arrive in 2 weeks. Wanted to replace the 2008 with something newer/more reliable. Really wanted a new Diesel Rubicon but 60K and there somewhat sketchy rep for quality made that a tough one.

My 2008 had almost no problems, but at 130000 miles it had become a rattletrap and is no fun to take on long trips. If I lived in a beach town I would have kept it just for top/doors off aspect.

Having owned a number of Toyota vehicles over the years, there was no doubt we were getting another one when the opportunity came. I chose the 4R though because it is sort of the Goldilocks of SUV's IMO...the Sequoia is too big, the Rav 4 too small, the 4R just right for my family's needs. We wanted something that was reliable and comfortable enough for a daily driver, but had the capabilities to be taken off road and used for some remote camping trips. So far so good...I love my 4R.

I recently traded in our 15 Xterra for a 21 4runner, my reason for choosing the 4runner was we needed something bigger for our uses, and also owning a 80 series landcruiser that's my wheeler I liked that it felt similar in many ways. That said if anything ever happens to the 80 I will be replacing it with a unlimited rubicon JL.

Three kids, and, Toyota. Other vehicle is a Sienna.

When my drive was my wife's Pontiac Grand Am, got sick and came home from work , had a big pile of snow in front of the driveway. Thought, **** it, just hit it bulldoze it up, park it on the driveway, when I feel better in the morning, snow blow it out. That did not work. Snow got trapped under some air dam. Had to dig all the snow out, then slow blow, while sick. It was that day I swore never again will I have a car that sucks in the winter/low to the ground. Later on found out snow tires would have helped.

That same Grand Am busted a radiator hose less than a year old. I got that great GM feeling.

To offset performance, you have just about the toughest and most reliable drivetrain components that exist. I love that the drivetrain is a dinosaur.

This was a big selling point for us, too. I wanted a modern version of my 1986 first gen with the 22RE, that I had in college. Our 2019 TRDOR was the closest I could find and VERY similar in a lot of good ways.

it's like a homage to days past, without the midlife crisis...haha. :mullet:

I just wish that dinosaur had about 50 more HP and lots more torque, or that they'd upgrade the dinosaur to the V8 dinosaur with the 6-speed dinosaur. :heh:

Yes I would love more power, too. Really just to make towing easier on the truck. I don’t need it. It would be nice though.

I assume you mean the LJ when you reference the Wrangler Unlimited? Cause it’s the best Jeep.

Off pavement there is no comparison.

I've been looking at pulling the trigger for like three years.... I have a hard time making up my mind, obviously... So for those of you that considered the FJ or Wrangler Unlimited what was it that made you pick the T4R? Would the new Wrangler with the new pentastar engine be a game changer? Thanks for your time..

4Runner: Unfettered Reliability, Endless Aftermarket Options, Looks Awesome
Jeep: Unreliable, cheap
FJ: Expensive for the used market, 2 less doors.
