I haven't started any threads, but have lurked since January and learned a lot of stuff searching through old posts. That being said, while I know it's frustrating to see the same questions get asked, wouldn't it be better to answer them instead of telling people to search? It takes the same amount of energy in most cases, and would help create a more friendly atmosphere (fwiw I don't think the atmosphere is unfriendly, but could be better in that regard). Coming from someone who doesn't know a lot about vehicles, maybe some people may be asking questions about their particular situation even though another similar question has been answered and they don't know they can apply it to theirs? Overall, I will say this is a great forum and has been an amazing source of knowledge to me, I give thanks to Greg and all the people that freely give their knowledge.

As a retired moderator - I get it, and I can't say that I blame you. I will say that I do feel like you keep this forum on topic and enjoyable while still being informative.

...but is this forum better for serving as income or as a community that shares information about a specific vehicle (and more exactly a specific generation of a specific vehicle)? I like to think the reason [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] was tapped for a moderator of the 5th Gen forum is because he cares about the community and sharing the information and opinions that we have here.
This thread is more in relation to the 5th Gen subforum. Granted, most of us lurk here only, but that doesn't mean it is the only subforum on this site. [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] does a fantastic job of keeping us all on subjects that relate to 5th Gen 4Runners. I will gladly admit that he is a much better moderator than I ever was.
It is a much harder job (when done correctly) than anyone on here is admitting to (including [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION]). I don't envy his position or his title, but I do respect his authority and enjoy his involvement with our community. I think he is doing a fantastic job of making this an informative forum while keeping it friendly and fun - all of this while "cutting down the noise" (@lawndart)
...your thread was closed at the request of several members by a different moderator. If you PM either of the moderators to help you trim the fat out of that thread and reopen it with "the facts", it is a ton of work on their part (remember they are still moderating the rest of this site). However, these are all good guys - they may be able to help you out in short order.
All that being said, I think you have a valid point. However, from an outside perspective and when you are moderating an entire site, an out-of-control thread (not your fault at all) is quickest to deal with by closing it.
Agreed on every point. This site is owned by someone. They are making money off of it, but they are also supporting a community by having this website. That community needs direction. Otherwise, it isn't helpful to anyone.
It has been my experience with forums that 'most' users have a problem search the internet, find a forum, sign up, get the information they need, and never come back. I am guilty of this! I have accounts on VW Vortex, VW TDI, VW Caddy, IH Scout, Tundra Talk, Jeep forum(s), and even a "small Toyota truck" forum.
Then there are the users that come in, get the information or feedback they need, and then squat on the forum... Without moderation, these users can get so far off subject that a thread or threads are no longer useful. They will bad mouth everyone. They will use the forum as their own podium for spouting... well... anything. Honestly, I got tired of trying to herd the sheep and the wolves together while protecting the sheep from the wolves at the same time.
Finally, you have the members that care. They care about the community. They care about the subject matter. They care about the discussions, the information, and the other members. I truly believe that is why [MENTION=106176]wfo9[/MENTION] started this thread!

I've been around here awhile and I've seen it REALLY bad- out of control threads (pure bullshit) that went on for days. Greg reigned it in- anyone that was here saw it and appreciated it.
1E sees black and white, no grey. That's what makes him a good Mod. No Mod can please everybody- especially the whiney babies that get on here and can't handle a little direction from the mgmt.
I appreciate the work 1E does- I've known him quite a while and his heart is in it.
If/when he goes my prediction is that things will be much worse.

My knowledge about cars in general has gone form zero to some what knowledgeable. Mostly due to many dumb posts, mostly thanks to the many patient members hhhmm [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] ... If my posts were closed, I would have left a long time ago.. Luckily Greg leaves me alone for the most part :hiding: (<3) ...
I see a lot of new people on here asking the same questions and for the most party its self resolved by someone redirecting to an old post or the search feature. In my opinion, it takes as much time to redirect than to close a post and have a new member wonder wth happened.
Everyone will have an opinion and mine is, be patient. Only because most people were patient with me and I thank the forum and its members for the knowledge.

Here's my piece about this board...
This isn't my first rodeo, been a member of other auto board and boards in general. I've racked up thousands of posts of all of them (sounds pathetic now that I write it out haha :biggrin1: ) and made real life connections wit great people. It was a real community and felt as such.
Here? Not to much. Not sure why either. I have no desire to check this board everyday like I did/do on other boards. For some reason I just don't feel like this board is very "nurturing" to discussion. Don't get me wrong, there is a wealth of information here, but it all seems kinda lacking. More encyclopedic than discussion.
As for the SC thread, I knew it would get locked quick. I get it, we have a multi-page thread as is. But this new own, at least, came with a promising image from Magnuson direct and could be start of a new and more informative thread. Lock the old and nuke any off topic discussion in the new one. Not my board, not my rules, so it is what it is.
I hope to see y'all on the trail one day.

I have met a TON of people all over the country- and I mean ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. Awesome people.
Mods keep it organized here, the content is what it is. We need good mods to keep this place from getting like Lord of the Flies..

I may have a unique perspective. I joined MANY moons ago with a 2008 4Runner and the site was a hot hot mess. I delt, searched, interacted. Then I was gone for many years. I returned with a 2016 4Runner and was pleasantly surprised at the difference and don't even want a supercharger. (sorry, had to toss that in)

I'm going to do just that once I have an update to share. The point of my post wasn't to complain either--the OP asked why threads get locked and I shared mine as an example (people going off-topic and arguing politics).
That works too. I'm not saying you've done this, but there's no reason to be a jerk. So many times people come off so strong just because someone asked a simple question.

100% agree! This was my point also! Not saying 1E is doing a bad job. (Not here enough to make that call)
But there's something about the atmosphere here, that just isn't condusive to camradery like other forums.
Has great information here, since this is a dedicated forum for t4R's.
I own a 3rd gen, and a 5th gen. so that's why I come here for the useful information. (It's not for the discussions.)
I'm sure when the newbs see threads get closed and moved. They think twice about posting there questions for fear that someone may have already asked that question a 1000x before.
IMHO the sticky section is where the knowledge should be kept. The general forum should be allowed to evolve. (But I understand for the old timers it does get old seeing the same question over and over.)
But if that makes you mad enough to attack the poster? Then maybe you might need a break from the internet!
