Why does Toyota keep using Fipg

Cancelled my order for a new tacoma after reading their forum for 5 months. Seems that the fipg they use leaks at the timing cover.. I’m actually accepting my brand new 4runner this monday or next monday. Seems the 4runner has the same issue with timing cover leaks. Why do they keep using it? It’s known to leak, is a major job, and Toyota knows it.

My 2011 Trail has a seep it this area. The source could be timing cover or timing chain tensioner cover. It doesn't drip. I think the seep began several years ago judging from extent of the area that has attracted dust. I'll have an opportunity to inspect it more closely by removing the air filter box when I change spark plugs this winter.

From what I have read, the 5th Gen 'Runner 4.0L engines are NOT the same as Tacoma or 4th Gen 'Runner 4.0L engines, although they do have the same 1GR designation. That said, they may weep in this area. The two vids above are for the earlier 4.0L.

Theoretically, FIPG should be superior. You have control over seal chemistry and if you can properly manage automated assembly processes you have precise control over volumetric deposition and surface mating. That is, if they get it right.

I’m ok with weeping, it can go on like that for awhile apparently on the runner and not be an issue.. on the tacoma it becomes an issue fast. One guy had his leak 4 times before 100k and the last time toyota did it it only held for 2k miles.. i finally said enough and cancelled my order. Now one day to a week before I accept my brand new 4runner I start reading about that same issue here, lol. Sometimes reading forums isn’t good for me!

FIPG is just regular RTV silicone sealant, same as everyone everywhere uses. It's been a long time since I had my '07 Taco apart to fix this leak, but IIRC it is more of a block/timing cover design issue than a sealant problem. My 11 4runner has been seeping from there for at least 150k, maybe 200k miles. I'll fix it when (if) I ever have to pull the timing cover.
