Thes guys are the 1% exception. Most people want to quit after that 1st big rock smashes againt the undercarrige or a rock cuts a tire and never return. I do not have mud here in the desert but most people will not like cleaning thick slimmy mud of their 4runner. Most of the mud pictures we see on the forum is someone in a water puddle without any real mud.

Nope If it came accross offensive sorry, I was mealry stating that though 75% of drivers are female and use their 4Runner to pick up their kids. We have a large select few on the forum willing to play and trail all day long if they had the time and trails

Colorado Mud is knida mean, its slimy at times, sandy at times and out of no where CLAY! ewwww. I know how you feel on what puddle jumpers are doing

I would quit if that happend to me, then i would either repair my tire and cry when i get home. Or say when I get home (slighly drunk) "Dude, look at this monster. I did that while i was on safari fighting them their river crocs! in the mountains today" reality of it is my spotter said driver I wasnt listening and pulled passanger, not wanting to look back I floor it to prove it chose a better line. Thats the 50% i see not the 1% IMO :driving:

I didn't own my 4th gen for 24hrs before I was slinging mud with it! Seriously, thats why I bought it. I wanted something capable offroad but still well refined with some luxury for my on road journeys. I just don't have pics because with my wierd work schedule and lack of 4x4s among my friends, I don't have anyone to wheel with so I go alone.

thanks for posting those pics and videos though, better than what i have found on here for 4th gen off road pics. the thread i was referring too was one from like 2010 that was only 4 pages long with maybe 10 pics in it of 4Runners on dirt roads.

People purchase the 4runner for multiple reasons, they pull your average trailor with ease, carry tons of cargo, ride comfortably down the road, look great doing whatever there doing, and although the 4runner may be an excellant off road rig it doesnt come from the factory ready to take on your biggest mud pits or tallest rocks. lift kits, tires, rims, diff breather mods, snorkel mods, suspension mods, body armor, it all cost money yo. There are people who own 4runners who would love to have the money to make there truck the sickest rig and cant really afford it or find it practicle while there changing dirty diapers and feeding there kids...

I drove mine over a pretty sizable curb at the Royals game Saturday night to take the shortcut to a nice parking spot! This thing is so off road capable, I didn't even need to put it in 4WD!

I do take mine off-roading during the summer. But only on trails and not like something you'll see on TV. I need the 4wd for the ability for some of our tenting camping trips into the wilderness. We leave the camper at home and just take the 4runner to where the trail ends and then hike in from there. The 4runner gives me the clearance and 4wd for some of the unpaved hills.

I also like the 4wd for the snow...and when I visit relatives in upstate NY. There are places there you don't want to be caught in when one of their famous 2' lake-effect storm hits you.

see a lot more people are chiming in with actual off road videos and pictures than some of the old threads i was looking at. really cant wait until my son is old enough to take him out on the trails with me, until then my truck is a pavement princess. here are a couple videos of the trails behind my friends house that i used to hit up every weekend to shoot the shiz and drink beer with friends. cant wait to take the 4Runner out, pretty sure she will do better than my 8,000# 1 ton truck did

I will freely admit that if I see REAL mud, I will probaby turn and drive away. I love water crossings but have no interest or desire to wheel in mud. I am definitely not a hardcore offroader/wheeler. I'm all about getting away, exploring the backcountry and moutain passes, and enjoying great scenery. I am not about conquering big obstacles or mud holes.

I agree with Flyer. My 4runner is a tool I use to get me away from people and enjoy the outdoors. It hauls my paddleboard and kayaks to lakes inaccessible by most vehicles. It gets me to the great photo spots and places people don't want to venture too. My t4r can handle much more than I throw at it and I like knowing that. It's not a rock buggy or prerunner but it gets the job done and I love driving it anywhere.

yea i see the 4Runner as an adventure vehicle, kinda one of the reasons i bought it. its one of the last body on frame SUV's available today.

I drive down forest roads all the time. the definition of "road" all depends on how well it's maintained. few of them are paved, most are full of pot holes and heavily rutted. I stay off "trails" I'm just not that into true wheeling. It's a great vehicle for my use, great stock clearance, 4WD high/low. I use 4WD anytime the road is wet/snow/ice/gravel/sand/dirt.

If I wanted a real wheeling vehicle I'd probably buy an FJ as I really like Toyotas. for me the big difference between the 4R and FJ are the approach and departure angles. the FJ is "stubbier" than the 4R, they can get up and down without scraping where the 4R can't.

before I get flamed I'm talking about stock 4Rs, you could of course pimp the thing out and go anywhere.

When I'm off-roading, I'm usually shooting video. I do get pics of the other guys' 4Runners and post them in the 1st/2nd gen. But when I'm driving my 4th gen up something, I hand my camera to a buddy and have them shoot video.

Fixin' to order the GoPro HD cam so I can shoot video as I'm driving.

But, there are a few things that deter me. 1. it's my daily driver so I don't want to wheel too hard. and 2. I need some friends . You won't try the big hole if you're alone. I need a group to go out and wheel with. Anyone in utah wanna hit up some trails?

I use my 4runner mostly for everyday driving, but I wish I lived closer to states like Arizona and Colorado where I could hit some light offroad trails. However if I had access to these places, I would not be doing anything extreme which requires major mods to the vehicle. Just a simple offroad trail.
