Well I hope this thread changes you mind about what our 4th Gens do as the "1%"

I like the way this thread is getting nice videos and pics of 4th Gens playing not doodling
 
Great thread guys, I just wanted to say that I completely agree that the percentage of 4th gens hitting the trails seems to be a bit low, but I really think this all has to do with the stock ground clearence being lower then the other gens. The capabilities of the truck are impressive but then as mentioned there are just to many people who won't allow the slightest body damage/scratches to risk going into the woods. Where I live, all the offroad vehicles have a solid coating of west coast pinstripes and I'm yet to find another 4th gen with any signs of trail damage - its a little disappointing.

This is me. I own a 4wd to get out and about, not to prove myself better than a piece of rock. I'm not afraid to get muddy, but I don't go looking for the crap, and if a nasty obstacle or ledge has a bypass, I'm just as likely to go around as to take it on. Double that if I'm out by myself, which is frequently.

I'm definitely not one of those people. Mine has a healthy coat of pinstriping and a dent in the left rear quarter. I think it looks better than the day I got it in pristine condition.
 
East coast pinstriping: high school parking lot. :happens: but soon I'll be out of this school and away from careless idiots. Yay!

I'm gunna lift it so that swinging doors will hit my rock sliders, hopefully!

But my college has massively wide parking spots. If I don't like the spots and feel my truck is in danger, I have a lifted 4Runner, I can make my own damn parking spot! :boink:
 
maybe because they fairly expensive new and most cant afford to abuse their daily driver.

I do think less 4th gens see off road more than any other gen from my observances off road. I saw more 5th gens off road last year than 4ths. I think Toyota backed off the off road marketing push (no rear locker til '09) a little with the 4th gen and they seemed to have a look that was eaten up by the soccer mom crowd but that doesn't mean they aren't out there and the ones that do choose to go off road just are a little further inbetween but that doesn't mean the 4th gens aren't capable.

With the reintroduction of the 5th gen and the TE it brought a focus back onto 4Runners still having a rugged model to play with and it's one of the last in it's class.

No diff locker or a factory option to disable traction control without locking the center diff. That really irks me
 
4th gens did have a softer image and was the first generation that was part of the 20"+ wheel fad which does nothing to add to a 4Runner reputation as being one of the last true SUVs.

I agree. However...I have found that even without those abilities, my 4th gen does quite well with off-roading. My biggest complaint is the lack of rear-end clearance. Am about to order a CBI rear bumper to address this.

This reminds me of the other day when I was sitting in English class, and my Viper remote started beeping, letting me know my shock sensor has been activated. I ran out to my truck, luckily no damage. I'm guessing some idiot bumped into it too hard or something.

i drove around a 2500HD extended cab in and about the woods for years, if i had a nickel for everytime i drug my rear bumper or got hung up on the hitch i'd prob have a dollar.

the 4Runner should be much better on the trails around here.
