niceeee!!!

4th gens did have a softer image and was the first generation that was part of the 20"+ wheel fad which does nothing to add to a 4Runner reputation as being one of the last true SUVs.

Nothing wrong with a 20" wheel when the truck is made capable :D

I would do some light wheeling if I knew some good places near by where I wouldn't get in trouble, but Id also be concerned about damaging something... defiantly don't want unnecessary expenses.

who doesnt love changing a tie rod or cv axle in the woods?

No but my 05 z71 silverado was the biggest POS I've ever owned. Replaced the starter, 4wd motor, rear axle seal and speedometer before 80k.......

the gauge cluster was a recall item, the 4wd motor you speak of was actually probably the encoder switch and the rest of the stuff sounds like yo got unlucky. i have owned 88, 92, 96, 04 chevrolet pick ups and the only thing i have ever ha fail are suspension parts like tie rods and ball joints. the least "reliable" truck was the 04 because i had knock sensors go out twice and camshaft position sensor once. my 92 had over 200,000 miles on it with all stock internals, my dad had it before me and now my cousin has. has a slight tap from a stuck lifter and the water pump has been replaced 3 times but its a 200,000 mile engine.

The gauge cluster was a recall?!?!?! I spent $200 on a esky cluster for nothing!

I have to agree with rebelbowtie on this one, my '00 chevy had a lot of work done (3 trannys, 2 rear ends, t-case, & front diff) but I put it through hell; it definitely spent more time on dirt than pavement. The motor is still running strong at over 200K right now. I love my 4Runner, but the 'silver slut' will always be my favorite truck.

But these things don't happen on yota's is my point. Period. Matt have you had to do anything on your runner?

Sorry to stay off topic but...

That's just not true Zach, they do happen on yotas, I've wheel with enough to see it first hand.

The 4runner has not been NEARLY put through the paces the Z71 was. The last pictures (with the camper) are at 180K mi hauling a '70s ~2K lb. camper, after a 24 hr drive from AL to CO and climbing the mountains on I-70.

Here's a few off road pics of my 4r to get on topic.

Sorry but I don't usually get out and take a lot of pictures of my vehicles on trails because I'm too busy driving and don't like to park on/in obstacles.

A little color matching and debadge job that truck could have been a real looker! Also this pic freaking sucks!! That's pretty stuck

Also you didn't waste money on an esky cluster because you got a 120mph speedo and trans temp gauge out of the deal! I am really saddened when a truck doesn't come with a trans temp gauge it really tells me they didn't consider many people towing with it.

Yeah I thought it was a looker anyway :) It was a trail machine, all the mods were purpose driven. Yeah I liked the tranny gauge but in all my years (10) driving it I never once saw the tranny get even slightly hot. And it wouldn't do 120 without the programmer (109 speed limiter)

Yeah, did you read the little story with it? I had to be extracted backwards by a bull dozer, only after burning up my M8000 motor and getting a ground packer stuck. Also I just wanted to drive down the road, had no intention of mud riding that day but once I hit the soft mud reverse didn't work and gravity sucked me into the ditch. They were preparing to pave it but I didn't know until it was too late.

edit- I also pulled a very heavy 14x8 lawn mower trailer with 3 mowers often, as well as the same trailer loaded 4-5 rows high with hay bales.. never had the tranny temp rise

yea i read the story with it, i am really shocked that with the 4L60e and aftermarket tires and that big honking camper unit yo never saw the trans temps get hot. i had factory trans cooler and auxiliary cooler in my HD and from time to time it would still creep up when towing. not too high usually around 210* but thats getting pretty close, around 250 fluid starts breaking down and every 10* over 260* i have read it cuts fluid viscosity by half

I thought you had to replace the tranny at least once on your truck?

My point is that my silverado NEVER saw regular off road use and had those problems. The truck was junk and I'll never buy a gm product ever again (save a vette) because of that truck. I loved it but it had sooooo many issues. And honestly the 2005's were the worst year from what I've read online. My point is that I have similar mileage (68k) on my yota with much more aggressive offroading usage and have had ZERO problems, knock on wood.
