I have wondered the same. All 4R aftermarket products are nuts.
I guess it has to do with the 5th gen not selling very well at all until 2015, so small market until recently.
I also wonder if there is a market expectation that 4R owners are ready to pay more.
Which is becoming funny in that as of 2018-9, the 5Th generation is an absolute steal considering the prices of crossovers and JLU Wranglers.
I find it odd as well. A lot of the mods for the 5th Gen are just as expensive as those for a 200 series Land Cruiser or a late model HD truck, both of which require more materials and structural reinforcement. Keeping things light on this platform might play a role in the costs due to more complex design and lighter materials. I hate that the 4Runner is so easily impacted by even the smallest amount of added weight.

It looks like all the manufactures know what the expected price points are at. Most of the parts are all at the same prices from one company to the next. Its prohibitive to the average buyer.
There's not a lot of difference from one company to the next so the cost of R&D is minimal, they just know what a certain segment is willing to pay so they don't go any lower.
As long as enough keep paying those prices they will keep charging them too, as much as I'd like to see the prices go down I don't blame them for charging what people are willing to pay.
