Why the Dealer truly is the Stealer

07 Sport here with about 160k miles. Reluctantly took it to a Dealer in Philadelphia area earlier this week for a wheel bearing replacement after moving cross-country and not being set up for any kind of repair work in my new house. New in town here and had never been to this or any other Dealership here before.

The Dealer service tech told me that all but $100 deductible would be covered by my after-market warranty for the bearing, and he quoted me $120 for a vehicle inspection and $100 for an alignment after bearing replacement. He said I should expect the total to be between $325 and $350.

Next day he called and told me the bearing was replaced and they had replaced a few burnt out bulbs, and the total was $385. No problem. He also told me it was due for an oil change, which I declined (because I use full synthetic and a Mobile 1 filter and had changed it about 4k miles earlier, just before driving X-country). He called me back later and said they had changed the oil anyway, but would not charge me for it so my total was still $385. Reeally did not want the oil change, but fine.

I went in the next day to pick it up, and they sent me to the cashier, where they give me a bill for $550. Cashier had more interest in pinterest on her phone than me and sent me back to the service desk. The service specialist I spoke with the day prior was not present, and another specialist said he could not modify the bill and I had to pay the full $550, which I did not accept. He agreed to walk through the itemized bill together with me, where we found an unexplained $100 charge that he said should have been removed. He then spent about ten minutes on the phone with a manager making sure he could remove it, which he eventually did. This brought down the total to $450, $65 more than the $385 I was told over the phone.

Incidentally, when he was on the phone I overheard the service tech in the next booth explain to a young woman the biggest load of shit I have ever heard. She had received a coupon in the mail from the Dealer for a $29.00 oil change, and she wanted that done while other work was being done on her Rav4. Unfortunately, he explained to her, this coupon was only valid for a conventional oil change, but her vehicle was only compatible with synthetic oil. She was appropriately wary of this explanation, and he went on to explain that the specific parts and gaskets within her engine needed to have the lubrication only from synthetic oil, and that using conventional oil would cause them to degrade rapidly. So her only choice was to pay for the significantly more expensive synthetic oil change, to which she reluctantly agreed. Wow! (incidentally, i approached her later and told her that was the biggest load of hogshit ever spewed...how can that guy say that with a straight face?!)

Anyway, I had now blown about 45 minutes just to pick up my 4Runner, and I figured getting out with a $65 extra charge and a conventional oil change that I really did not want wasn't so bad, so I resigned to just pay the $450 and get the hell out.

This is pure shameful dishonesty. This is why I don't trust them even to change my oil and why I would rather spend 5 days struggling through a repair on my own than going to them. This is why they so very appropriate call it the Stealer.

Damn, man. Honestly, I know that feeling of just wanting to do what it takes to leave when you've spent that much time, but I still don't think I could pay for that oil change on principle. But again, easier said than done when you're not the one there. Still, I'd like to think that I would have told them that not only am I not paying for an oil change I specifically declined, but they just replaced my full synthetic with conventional, and that I now expected them to drain the new oil and replace it with full synthetic, on top of removing the charge.

I would’ve charged them the remaining cost of my oil and oil filter based on another 1000 miles of use left. They threw your money down the trash and then charged you on top of that.

Oooh, that is so infuriating! I'm glad to hear that warranty covered most of the cost. "Replacing bulbs" and that oil change.... I would've punched someone after the bill adjustment nonsense. "Have to pay the full amount" my a$$... Your answer to the 1st oil change request... what part of "no" do they not understand?? I would've walked into that other office and told that other service guy he was full of dookie... Hearing stuff like that makes my blood boil.

I wonder if that Philly dealer has a cool parts guy or if the D-bag disease is endemic to that dealership..... At the dealer I go to for parts, the parts guy I usually deal with seems as cool as the day is long. Since I'm somewhat of a regular (not that I'm always replacing things) He always cuts me a break on prices. I have never got the feeling that he (or the rest of the parts staff I've dealt with for that matter) is jerking me around. He even recognizes me when I walk in, partly because (he said) of my last name but also because I rarely get OEM parts for anywhere else. I really haven't tried to calculate my % or anything, but based on published prices across several other sources, I feel like I'm paying a good price for the OEM quality. Now I've never taken the truck there for any repairs but I just wonder if the service folks pull that crap like you've described, OP.

Story time:

My wife used to have a Honda Accord (08) and it had bad piston rings. I got a bulletin from Honda about excessive oil consumption. I did the oil changes and never noticed any issues. One day I decide to check the dipstick, completely out of the blue. I can't think of what made me decide to do that. Boom! I see it's way low on oil (!!). To the point I go by the closest store to get a couple quarts to put in before I head home from work (45 mile commute, I drove it that day for some reason). I pull out the bulletin I had saved, read it and call the dealer we bought it from. Bad news, we were almost a year past the end date of the extended warranty offered due to the issues with the 08's. They say bring it in and say it should be covered. I'm not sure but I'm hoping I read something wrong.

We do the oil consumption check according to the prescribed method and it's confirmed. Ugh. Also, the service writer finds out he was wrong, the new piston rings are not covered due to the timing. I explain why we never brought it in before now, yadda, yadda. He says call Honda and see if they'll help out. His hands are tied, but has heard Honda will work with people. Ok, I call them, give my explanation, and they open a repair "case." They say they'll look into it. I think, yea right. Well, after about 2 weeks (I think it was) I get a call back and they say yes, they'll cover 75% of the cost as a "goodwill" offer, or something like that. I was ecstatic since piston rings meant a major engine job. We wound up paying, like 400-something, of a $2300-ish total bill. They even said, after it was all said and done, that the repair took less time than they thought so the total bill was actually a little less than estimated. Wow! So kids, there seem to be some good ones out there after all... :)

If you really want to do something about it, I'd suggest reporting it to Toyota
Toyota Customer Experience Center
Phone: (800)331-4331

https://www.toyota.com/support/contact-us

Also a lot of times, Toyota will send a survey a few days after the service, you can complain to corporate about your experience.

Finally, try BBB.

You may also want to share which dealership you went to so other members are aware of their shenanigans.

Thanks for sharing. I avoid dealerships as much as I can. I really only go in for recall / warranty work. All other stuff I try to do my self or take it to my trusted local mechanic.

That survey really does mean A LOT to the dealers. One bad review messes up their averages and will catch the attention of the managers, owners, Toyota etc.

thanks for the info. not sure how much more energy i want to expend on this. unless they really F'd something up that I will later discover, I consider my escape to be somewhat unscathed.

I've since been told that there is no clear indication for an alignment after changing the front wheel bearing. Esp since I had it aligned less than a year ago and the steering felt totally fine. True? If so, they got me on that one too, so maybe not so unscathed...

I don't particularly like calling a specific business out, but since you asked...this was Central Toyota in West Philadelphia. Maybe they saw my out of state license plate and thought they could stick it to me? I don't think so; based on the criminal blatant lie I witnessed to another customer regarding engine oil compatibility (with a straight face! how does he do that?!), I think this behavior is their norm and probably encouraged from management. Also, judging from the predominance of camrys, carollas, and rav4s visible in the service area, I sincerely doubt any regular contributors to this forum have ever been there, or at least more than once.

I have never heard about the need for an alignment after changing front bearings.
Wow, what a stealership.
Did you check the oil? They might not have changed it, just billed you.

Sorry to hear about your negative experience. It's too bad your still not in Arizona. I could give you a laundry list of reputable shops over an area of specialized areas that would be able to help you out with everything from routine maint. to custom fabrication. It's always advantageous to get a good recommendation before leaving your car with business you aren't familiar with.

I wouldn't have left. I'd contact the service director and talk to them about it. I also would've been PISSED had the dealer changed my oil after I told them I didn't want it to be done. That is why I refuse to take my vehicle to the dealer, I knwo it's more convenient and time saving to do so sometimes, but I absolutely hate the Toyota dealership service department at all of the dealers by me.

I have a funny story regarding that though. My girlfriend purchased a 2014 Corolla certified used from a dealer up in Cleveland in June of 2017. She then moved down here to Texas last year shortly after buying the car. Recently we noticed her AC wasn't getting cold. We took her car into Toyota Thursday of last week, dropped it off with the guy and he said he'd look at it because it was probably freon related. Called back a day and a half later and said it was fixed, she owed him $145 for the evac and freon adding that they did. We picked up the vehicle and the second we drove off the lot,the AC was not cold at all. We literally turned around and took it back to them. He said they would look at it the next day (which was Saturday) all of Saturday went by and we didn't hear anything. Monday came around and I finally called him close to 4pm. He said he hadn't been able to find the mechanic who was working on it. I called BS. He called me back about 30 minutes later with the entire diagnosis. He said the compressor was bad and it was a $1300 fix. I declined the repair, she got a refund for the freon adding they did and we picked up the car on Tuesday.

I called BS on him because they kept the car for a total of 4 days just to tell me in a matter of 30 minutes after I called them that it was the compressor. I don't think they did any work to the car until I called and they turned it on to see if the AC was working.

After all was said and done I contacted the Toyota dealer she purchased it from who said it was very rare to have a Corolla especially only a 4 year old car to have the compressor go out. He told me to contact Toyota experience and surprise surprise, they don't want to help her out with the issue or expense. This was a certified used vehicle that is barely a year old from that purchase date. Such BS

I know this isn't a Corolla topic but this thread got me pissed off about it haha

Needless to say, I will now be doing the work on her AC myself.

I had new Denso TPMS sensors installed with new tires at a tire shop, I had an appt. with the Dealership for a recall, so I took off w/o getting the Serial IDs uploaded.

My local Stealership claimed to require breaking down each wheel to get the TPMS sensor IDs, and time required. ~2 hours labor. :wtf:

So I bought a TPMS scanner, due to the wheel swapping I plan to do. Under 5 mins to upload a set of TPMS serial IDs.

Good story about the Corolla. Just out of curiosity, what dealership did you purchase it from in Cleveland? I had bought this 4R originally from a dealership outside of Cleveland, who totally lied about the condition of the car and sent me either fabricated or extremely misleading photos. They also didn't file the paperwork for the warranty that I had purchased from them, and when I actually had to file a claim about 2 months later, there was no record of the warranty. They had "forgotten" to submit the paperwork, which they did immediately thereafter. If they had been local I would have sued them.

You don't have to convince us that they steal. I think everyone has a story or two or three or however many it takes to stop going there!

My girlfriend got it from Sunnyside Toyota. She used to live a little outside of Cleveland as well and found it there. The previous owner had a lease on it so all the service was "supposedly" done by the dealer

First you need to name names about the dealer. It is a very frustrating story to read and nothing we as the wider community can do about shaming and avoiding bad dealers like this.

Secondly - welcome to Philly. Hit me up if you need a two car garage and tools to work on  I’m a western kid (NM) who ended on the east coast as well.

Thanks man. it was Central Toyota in West Philly. Again, hate to call them out publicly, but...

We've all had experiences like this at the dealer. What surprises me so much about this one is the extent and magnitude of it. Overcharging, misleading about costs, doing unnecessary work, and that blatant fraudulent bullshit about oil change. This is the worst I have ever seen, and that's what drove me to post on it.

Some have mentioned I should receive a survey from Toyota that is important to fill out; I have not yet.

Appreciate the garage offer. Once we get settled may definitely do that!

It really doesn't matter the brand but I'm pretty sure city dealers are worse than the country, maybe it's because you can't screw over as many people in rural areas. Was totally happy with our Subaru dealer in NW IL but the El Cajon dealer earns the name stealership.

Tried to convince my fiance she needed 60k service and a bunch of other BS. She thought I'd done it so called and I said yep, it should be in the national records. He then claims that he doesn't have access to national records and he's sure we never did it (must be psychic). She sticks to her guns thankfully and magically he comes back later and says oh yeah I see all your history now.

We've only been here two weeks but I'm going to go upgrade my tools soon so I can handle the 4Runner all on my own. From what I've heard the Toyota dealers here are no better.

Fully agree!

Tried to convince my fiance....
So typical...did they tell her her engine is not compatible with "air" and so they need to sell her "genuine toyota air" so that her engine doesn't break?

Highly recommend. Since I started doing all of my own work my 4Runner and other cars about 6-7 years ago, I've accumulated dozens of tools, some of which I have used only once but many that I use repeatedly. But the amount of money, and more importantly time and frustration, that I have saved by avoiding dealer/mechanic tomfoolery makes everything about doing it myself worthwhile. So glad I made the decision to start doing this stuff myself and so grateful to online support from forums like this.
