Will a full size mountain bike fit inside?

Like everyone stated, a full sized mountain bike fits inside but I got tired of cramming them in. I tried a roof mount Yakima rack but that was a real pain also with the height. I now have a hitch mount Küat NV 2.0 and love it. Bikes go on really easily and it doesn't wobble at all.

Some thing small and light like a single road bike or gravel bike I’ll throw it inside with the front wheel on (taking front wheels on and off quickly becomes a PIA). If I have two bikes or have my FS 29er, much easier to throw the Kuat rack on the back and go. The rack is also nice if you are traveling and need the space inside for other things.

I have the 47” and it fit perfectly in my 4th gen. The 5th gen is a little narrower, so I took a hacksaw to the triple track to make it fit perfectly in the 5th gen. I can easily slide the fork mounts around for any combo of 60/40/100 rear seat configuration.

Great! So you recommend trimming down the track to fit the 43” width of the sliding tray it sounds...

For the record, i have a hitch rack but have found it more a nuisance than a convenience for everyday use for a few reasons...

1) I use my cargo space constantly and need access to my rear hatch regularly and find it a pain to drop the hitch rack every time, and then end up getting my hands dirty dealing with a greasy lock pin

2) Gas mileage takes a major hit from resistance/drag

3) Garage depth wouldnt allow me to park inside

I still plan to use my hitch rack for trips where i need to load up my cargo space with gear, supplies, etc... but for daily driving it actually ends up being more trouble than its worth.

I like the idea of the convenience of the triple track for quick trips to the bike shop or trailhead and think the front wheel dismount is way less annoying than the multiple times weekly that I would need to keep dropping the trailer hitch to open the rear hatch.

I have a 29er and test fitted length and headroom and all fits fine. Rear wheel goes all the way to the front seat, and seatpost needs to be lowered but I have a dropper seat so its a non-issue.

I saw on mtbr that guys are using Origin8 fork mount blocks though for more flexibility to easily transition between QR and Through Axle vs the standard Saris mounts. Anyone here have experience with these too?

Maybe they don't make the length anymore, but I had the Saris set up in my 2010 TE and it fit perfectly (width) on the cargo deck. Just drilled throughit and added some bolts/wingnuts. Juts needed to drop the seat, but otherwise worked perfectly

I have fork mounts like the Origin8 with several adapters to fit various forks from old fashioned QR to thru axle boost.

Dropper seat post vs dealing with the seat clamp bolt = brilliant! Now I need a dropper seatpost.

I've been running a 1UP USA Quik Rack hitchrack for the last couple years and have been very happy with it.

The rack's only contact points are with the bike's tires, so frame rub is a non-issue.

Yep, dropper makes it easy

It always feels great to put my bike at the back of the car and take it up to the mountains. We got addicted to biking after our visit in Japan and a tour we did there on bikes. I'm not sure how many of you will ever get to visit this beautiful place full of awkward things to experience, however, if you ever do make sure to get some self guided cycling tours Japan while on it. An amazing experience to have during the summer or spring time. We were there during the cherry blossoming and the pictures we got were incredible.

I have a lot of off road recovery gear in a big aluminum box in the back of my 5th gen TRD Pro and have to take that out to put my mountain bike in. Not even close to worth it for me. Also I ride often with friends. I am using a Saris MTR-2 and added an extension so it carries 4 bikes now. Heavy rack but very robust so good to carry electric mountain bikes too-those are close to 50lbs.

Old thread, but what the hell I can relate. Bikes on the rack, cooler, gear, backpacks, suitcases and beer in the back. single with one bike may be different, but still hard to fit coolers and gear!

Yes, I put my bike in and out all the time. Easy. Back wheel goes in first, slide the back wheel in toward the driver side with bike at an angle. Bike lays down flat, sprocket up, with the front wheel turned up and handlebars down.

Is that a Timberjack? Looks just like mine if it is!
I've got the 27.5+ tires and love how it rides.

It is! This one is the 2018 model. I've been riding my Santa Cruz more when I do go on the trails. Few weeks ago I rode my Timberjack though and realized how much I enjoyed it and I was much faster on it. The plus sized tires are very awesome. I added a dropper-post and a shorter stem as far as any mods go. Ah, and their seat clamp adjustment.

My new Revel Ranger is in my 4R now, and it only fits with the front wheel removed and laying on an angle because I don't have a dropper post. I do have a 1Up rack, but accidents and security keep me from using it too much. Good bikes are about as difficult to find as ammo now, so I don't want any unnecessary risks.

Getting a clean bike in before riding it is one thing, getting the dirty version back in is another. There are great bike racks out there now, why the aversion? I have an older 26" Nomad, couldn't imagine wrestling a 29'er in there.

This ^^^^

I have a Santa Cruz 5010 which is a 27.5 and can get it in and out of the back fine. If you are looking for a rack there are some great options in this thread. I have this one and am super happy with it.

MonoRail 2"

You can get an extension to fit a 3rd bike if needed.

Dropper is key. I have 2 XL bikes, (single speed hardtail and full squish ripley) and they both fit fine rear wheel first with post down.

If my son goes riding with me I have a kuat rack I throw on the back to carry 2 bikes.

What pad is this?

Hey, do you know what Dakine pad you bought that fits in your 4Runner rear window so perfectly? Looks like everything online says the small sizes are 54” which is ~8” too wide and I bought one thinking I could make it work but it doesn’t come close to fitting. Thanks!!

I run the 1up heavy duty double bike rack on my hitch. When I purchased my latest FS bike I didn't have the rack on and it fit just fine with seats folded down (I removed front wheel), 2 bikes could have easily fit. Another option is add a towel or something over tailgate or get a pickup tailgate pad and have the fork and wheel hang out!

North Shore Rack. The OG vertical rack. Haven’t had problems on rougher roads like I had with the Thule hitch rack previously. Simply made and bombproof, like a 4Runner.

I make trips out to Squamish/Whistler where half the time you’re riding in the rain. Our bikes sometimes get real dirty. I’m not putting them inside.

I have definitely fit 2 bikes in with both front wheels off.

I had to bite the bullet and invest in a really nice bike rack. I know you said that you don't want to do that, but it was SUPER worth it for us. I got a really nice Thule on Craigslist for 400 bucks.

Worth every penny
