Will I be getting in over my head?

Not sure if anyone covered this but "Will you or your wife be able to climb into and out the 4Runner for the years to come ? since it is a little higher then a regualr sedan.
Best of luck

The height of the 4Runner was something I paid VERY careful attention to when I was shopping.
The height was a concern for me due to my elderly parents, especially my Dad who had health issues.
Even with the grab handles, getting Dad into my 4Runner was a sometimes challenging task.

I definitely recommend that jimmy2x takes an "extended test drive" or renting a 4Runner for a trip so he
can see how your wife does with getting into/out of the 4Runner.

While the X-REAS suspension feature is nice, jimmy2x needs to ask himself if the feature is worth having or not.
Will it make it easier for his wife to get into/out of the 4Runner? Since this is going to be a retirement/traveling
vehicle is the 4Runner planning to be the last vehicle purchased? If so, that means they will hang onto it well past
the standard and extended warranty periods. Is there a concern about what it might cost to repair the
X-REAS system (might not be cheap) after the warranty has expired?

Yours and Eddies concerns ARE something that I have considered. Fortunately, my wife's issues are not mobility related and I've managed to keep myself in pretty good shape. As noted, a sedan will not be practical, and whatever type of SUV/CUV that we would buy will require a running board since she is short.

Replacing the Xreas at some point is just something we will have to deal with if we keep the truck that long. Not sure if this will be the "last vehicle purchased" but for this type it may be. We will continue to use her '02 Camry for getting around town on a daily basis - it only has 45K.

1. Someone tell me if i'm wrong but i think only the seat is heated. I don't know for sure though i'm talking about an 03 limited...

2.
You will get 18" wheels standard

The exterior will have tiny differences
(not sure about the 08-09 model) to denote the Limited Trim.

Heated mirrors. AC power inverter, a lot of leather trimmed stuff. dualzone climate control.

6Disc CD changer, i hate digging around ejecting cds and popping them back in.
A lot of little things that just make it feel better.
IMPORTANT: some of this info i'm taking from the 03 limiteds, but little probably changed over the years. Your best bet is to test the sport and limited trim yourself for that model year(if that's what your set on).

3. JBL audio is definitely a nice stock audio set up. Is the price worth it? I would say you can get much better set-ups for the money, but unless you can install it yourself, it won't look OEM and may cost more for professional installation. JBL is fine for most people.

4. You can do a search on the forums about the nav system. It definitely looks nice, but most would agree it's a bit expensive (as all these integrated in-car systems are). I would just go for one of those 4 inch widescreens that plugs into the cig lighter, but thats just me. But then you kind of lose the wow factor. I haven't had much experience with the NAV system in a 4runner but how much better is it than those "portable" ones?

What color are you guys looking to get?

Thanks for the info and the link.

Looking to get Salsa Red, just like yours;): . This is the 1st year that it has been reasonably available in this area of the country.

Since you are looking at either Sport or Limited T4R, I would suggest also looking at Lexus GX470. I has all the features of Limited T4R and then some.

I would have to disagree with josh 220 about the XREAS suspension - while it improves the on-pavement handling of the truck, it also contributes to the harder, less comfortable ride. Also, it is not useful for off-roading.

Can't answer your questions with regards to Limited, but GX470 has heated seatbacks and you can set the heat as you like it. The seats are comfortable for the long haul. Great amount of storage space too - traveled to Canada last summer with my wife and my son, camping gear and supplies for 1 week and 2 sets of scuba gear including tanks (that takes up a LOT of space).

Navigation in my opinion is not worth the extra dollars. You can get a great portable navigation unit for a fraction of that amount.

Not sure about the JBL sound system, but unless you are an audiophile the stock system on either truck will be enough. :)

Good luck.

If only I could afford to purchase (and operate) the 470;): .

I guess that Xreas is something I will just have to test drive to see if we like it.

You mean while driving right? Because all 4runner models shut off the lights automatically when the engine is off.

It sounds like comfort and ease of use is a priority for you. The XREAS is an advantage for many and those of us that have it I think generally like the stiffer ride. I am glad that I chose the sport....but if comfort is the priority in your case I would suggest looking seriously at the Lexus or a late model Land Cruiser. Good luck and let us know.......??

I do appreciate the advice that you and all the others have offered. Maybe I do need to look at a used GX470. I've seen them at three years old offered CPO for about 35-37K but I do worry about the additional gas bite and possibly increased maintenance costs associated with a Lexus. Am williing to live with the 16/20 MPG of a V6 Runner but the 12/15 MPG of the Lexus could be tough to swallow.

Again, so far as Xreas is concerned, will have to try both out. It appears that the main advantage is increased stability on winding roads (something pretty rare where we live but sure to be encountered out West or in Alaska).

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to see a lot of the world and have lived in FL, CA and PA. Most of that stuff they call "fly-over country" remains a mystery as fly over is mostly what we have done. It is something that we really look forward to.

I'll be sure to let you all know what the decison is. Again thanks to all who responded. This is really a teriffic board.

First.........if you are tall the 4Runner may not be your best bet. If not the seats are very nice, supportive with a good lumbar support. I have made several trips and enjoy the seats......lots of options....to help a driver shift positions.

I am 6'2" and I have made a couple of trips that each lasted about 4 hours each way in the 4Runner. I completely agree that in the 4Runner it is easy to shift position, and I didn't find the seat to be uncomfortable.

If you really don't need the off road utility of a 4Runner why not consider a Highlander and get better road comfort and a little better gas mileage and you won't need running boards to get in it.

That is true, I do agree with you that if you don't need off-road the Highlander is a very nice vehicle. My mom has one and it is a very nice vehicle.

It's a Shock Absorber system though, so overall it's beneficial IMO. A simple system, it links the shock absorbers diagonally through hydraulic lines (e.g., the front left shock is linked to the rear right shock). A central control damper helps keep the system in balance.

"X-REAS, which is standard on the Sport and optional on the Limited, improves handling dynamics on the road with no compromise in off-road articulation or travel. X-REAS reduces the tendency of the vehicle to bob up and down in corners and improves handling by damping body pitch and roll. We compared 4Runners with and without the system and it really works, improving stability when driving hard through a 50-mph sweeping turn."

And from a post by Thai-
"Sport-trimmed 4Runners ride on a Yamaha-developed X-REAS suspension. Also available on the Limited, X-REAS is designed to improve on-road handling via a diagonally linked setup with increased vertical damping. Rear air suspension is optional on V8 trucks. "

"It works stupendously well without compromising the supple ride or hampering off-road ability. "

Your experiences are all your own opinion snhrph. And although you say it doesn't help offroad performance, it doesn't hurt it either, making it more beneficial than normal suspension.

Your experiences are all your own opinion snhrph.
Yes, they are MY own. MY opinions are based on MY experiences, and not on reading someone else's.

In addition, MY experiences are influenced by MY opinions and expectations, and as such are unique. Opinions of others, while may be valid, are much less influential in this process. One's OWN ability to form opinions and think critically is what leads the progress. Critical thinking, questioning the processes, policies, and establishments, ability to form your OWN opinion and draw conclusions are attributes of a LEADER.

If you are content with what other people are telling you, if you take what you are told as gospel, if you let others influence the way you think and act - then you are a FOLLOWER and are always looking at someone's BACK.

I prefer to see the road ahead of ME with MY own eyes, rather then be told about it by someone else.

As for the excerpts from Thai's posts...

Below is written by Thai:

"XREAS shocks are MONO-tube shocks and thus, are high-pressured shocks. They should (in theory) last the life of your 4runner or for a very long time. They are more efficient in damping the ride, but they are significantly firmer (read: less comfort) than regular low-pressure twin-tube shocks (found on non-XREAS 4runners).

XREAS is very good for cornering on-road (it's MAIN purpose)...helps to reduce body roll.

In off-roading?? XREAS probably won't do much in off-roading.

HOWEVER, monotubes are more fragile than twin-tube shocks...therefore, if a rock hits it, then it will have a higher chance of damage."

Before buying the SR5 I test drove the Sport as well, and noticed a MUCH firmer ride. As I spend a lot of time behind the wheel of my T4R, the ride comfort was very important to ME, there for MY decision was based on MY exprience and MY opinion.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the main purpose of any board is to allow members share ideas, experiences, and opinions.

Well I choose not to argue with you. If your experiences based solely on your own opinions work for you and keep you safe, then congratulations. I was merely pointing out facts so he didn't make his choice based on one persons negative opinions.

It was never my intent to care about any feedback I received about my post, I was simply stating facts that I researched, so that everyone can make their own choices with the information presented to them, and not based on incoherent preaching.

I have an SR5, I have never driven a Sport so I cannot comment on X-REAS. I would recommend that you test drive both though and form your own opinion on what works for you.

And that is what I will do. I appreciate the opinions on both sides and certainly believe that those coming down on opposite sides of an issue do so in good faith.

Thanks,
Jim

I hope you and your wife find something that suits you both, and are happy with your decision. :biggrin2:

I just priced out a fully loaded 4runner limited W/O Nav, the invoice price is only $3500 more than the GX470 base. I owned a 05 GX and in the real world mileage is more like 15 in the city and 19 on the highway, not too bad for a 5000 lb SUV. As far as maintenance cost, you can always bring the GX into any Toyota dealership for maintenance with the exception of warranty repairs.
I had the same issue as you when I was comparing the 2. The 4runner's seat bottom were too low and there is not enough headroom. While the GX had more than enough headroom and the GX's seats are one of the most comfortable seats I have even sit in. When I figure out the numbers, it was a no brainer.
