Will not shift out of 1st on cold start

99 limited 4wd auto with 120k. Got it about 15k miles ago without any issues.
The actual temperatures of the engine or transmission fluids do not seem to make a difference as this happens on cold days in the 30s and warm days 80+. Scan gage 2 confirms this. Transmission fluid temp can be anywhere from 60ish to 120 before it operates correctly. It takes a good five minutes or so at idle or maybe a little bit less when driving before it decides it is willing to up shift and operate normally. Time running seems to play a factor over the operating temp. Fluid level, odor, and colors seem fine. Ideas?

I had the same problem in mine. I replaced the transmission fluid with Amsoil ATF and dropped the pan and cleaned the filter and magnets. Since then it seems to shift much better on extreme cold and hot start ups. I also installed a Transmission cooler for the extreme hot days.

I was thinking that's what I'm going to have to do. Did you do the b&m 264/268 infront of the radiator? How many quarts did you have to buy/use?

The transgo shift kit is supposed to correct a few issues our transmissions have, one being a "rough shift when cold".

I wonder if this would help

It is common for the transmission to stay in gear longer on these 4runners when the engine is cold. This is to bring the RPMs up higher and warm the cold engine faster. It is a little annoying but perfectly normal. Trust me, I have had mine since it was brand new and it always does this when cold..:hatsoff:

reread your post and mine only really does it when its pretty cold outside. Maybe try and reset the ECU if you havent yet. Then drive it a week and see if that helps.

Yes, but only in second gear. And it should then shift if you reach 2,700RPM.
