Bumping an old thread, but you're the only one I've seen who's tried this.
I want to confirm:
So the overall diameter of the Sequoia springs were too wide at the upper perch (top)? So they did not fit snugly (they had 3/8" play)?
Or was the perch itself too wide for the spring?
If the spring was slightly too wide, I doubt that'd be an issue.
This post below shows someone using FJ Cruiser springs. Technically too wide, but fit just fine:

From what I can tell from basic part numbers, the front springs/struts from a 1st gen Sequoia should fit perfectly on the 4runner, as they are the same as the 1st gen Tundra that so many people use for their lifts. (maybe a few 8ths of an inch difference)
Maybe not TRD (progressive), but still should help, given that they are meant for a heavier vehicle in general. Sequoias start at 5000lbs, vs the 4Runner's 3950lbs.
I'm gonna try to take some measurements and get some part numbers at my local junkyard in the next few days of 1st Gen Sequoia suspensions.
(Coil width is hard to properly measure when ON the vehicle, hence my question)
Sequoias seem to be relatively unknown in their parts compatibility with the 4runner vs the Tundra, so they are usually pretty complete in the junkyards.
I could not find 1 Tundra for my Tundra Brake Upgrade that didn't already have the whole front end removed, but there were complete Sequoias galore, with the exact same 231m caliper. I'm willing to bet the parts are cheaper too, as they aren't 'hot' items at the junkyard. I got my whole SBU for around $100, including new pads.
I know that springs provide the lift, but the shocks 'limit' it. Stock 4runner front struts are around 16" uncompressed, and the Sequoia starts at 17.5" +.
For the rears, stock 4runner starts around 19.5" and the Sequoia starts at 22"+
I'm honestly surprised that more people haven't tried this as well. Looks like this could provide a good solid 2"+ lift on a budget with all matching parts and not having to cherry pick from different vehicles.
I'll post back with results, eventually.
