Will You Change the V6 for a diesel?!

just opening this post to know if anyone here will trade a v6 for a diesel?!

i have a friend that has a 06 limited diesel and wants a v6...pretty weird here in my country where fuel costs 6 usd for gas and 5 usd for diesel.

This are for premium gas and premium diesel

I had to fill up today my v6 from E and It took 120usd to fill up, while the diesel took 100..

anyone willing to trade for a diesel??

Although I'd LOVE to see Toyota selling Diesel versions here in the US....trading my V6 for one is NOT an option. Won't be legal in the US since it's NOT approved by the EPA for this vehicle.

Even if it was legal...the cost of pulling the engine shipping ..then putting in the engine would be cost prohibitive. Minimum cost of $10,000.

I don't know if i would actually buy one but i would like to see the option available from the factory. The australian 3.0l turbodiesel has 170hp/302ft-lbs so we know the power is there. I wouldn't do or buy a swap tho.

i would say it all depends on you, your wallet and your driving habits. you got your v6 and are accustomed to it, if you can handle the gas prices i say keep the v6. getting accustomed to a diesel isn't easy. before i bought my diesel 4runner i had an v6 04 accord and it took me a while to settle into the slower diesel but then again the diesel does have better mpg. in the end its all up to you. both have their pros and cons, you have to decide which ones are priorities to you.

they come diesel from factory, they import the V6 and the diesel here to my country, he will ship the car to the US if anyone wants to trade.. the diesels come with the 1KZ engine.

we get from the local toyota dealer only the V6 which is different in many aspects from the USA version and the diesel..for example, the limited he has doesnt come with steering wheel controls, No trac,DAC,110v etc

Yea. This is kinda a tricky question. I would love the option of a U.S. spec'ed diesel. Better fuel economy and longer lifespan.

But, you can't simply import any ole' diesel you want. 1. There are Federal/State emissions laws to contend with and 2. US is move towards ultra LOW sulfer fuel, and the engines spec'ed here are made to run on it. I know it isn't universal, yet, but most engines in the US have been required to be able to run on it the past years.

So. The day Toyota develops a U.S. spec'ed diesel for the 4runner, sure, I would be interested. Otherwise, I pass.

Sorry it can't be done...The Diesel engine is NOT approved to run in the US. It has to go through a whole bunch of EPA testing and approval signatures. That will take YEARS...and many THOUSANDS of dollars.

If Toyota ever offers that engine as an option then they also have to go through this same process....But they'll be selling tens of thousands of those engines..

Personally I'd buy a diesel if Toyota or Nissan offered it. I'm NOT a speed demon..But the diesel has nice torque which I need for towing. The better gas mileage is nice too. 90% of my driving is to and from work on the highway traveling about 70mph.

Honestly, they will one day. American's are just now starting to realize how superior a properly designed diesel can be.

We remember the nasty ones built in the 70's, right when we made laws that essentially made them illegal for all but semi's.

As technology has improved and we are able to develop clean diesel engines, and American's start learning about how superior 1. a fuel and 2. an engine design; they will come around. Right now, I bet you, Toyota is working on a U.S. spec'ed model.

They were legal...A few cars had diesels (VW Rabbit for one)...Not to mention Full size pickups.

Developing the clean diesel is a lot easier with the new Ultra-Low Sulfur gas mandated about 5 years ago.

Never said illegal, but as we know; diesel engine selling in the united states dropped. The cost of the new emission laws were prohibitive, as was the cost of convincing American's they wanted them.

But I understand what you're saying...

Chryco has a Diesel SUV....The only one so far.

The cost isn't that much higher. It's even less different in price then a Standard car to a Hybrid.

And when you start mass producing them...the production costs drop.

For me...I put a LOT of miles on my vehicles...mostly highway driving. So I'd LOVE a Diesel....The Nissan Diesel version sold in Europe has a 40% INCREASE in highway gas mileage over the V6. I suspect the same type of increase with the Toyota diesel. FOR ME...any cost difference will made up the first year. Any year after that is all savings.

I'd like to point out that while this ultra-low sulfur fuel is good in some respects, it is complete garbage to the engines. Part of the reason manufactuerers are not importing as many desiels is because we have such piss poor quality. Not to mention the large number of desiel engines taking a dive because of the lack of sulfur and some other additives that were used as lubricants. Its like when we switched from lead to non-leaded fuel. These engines really need to have additives added almost every fill up to prevent serious issues. (Attended a course on desiels that went through this, our main engine was the 6.0L PowerStroke, but it is not endemic to that particular engine)

Also, while a desiel 4Runner would be cool, getting parts here would be a pain in the ass. Not to mention that few dealerships would have experience with them.

Sign me up.. I'd buy a diesel anything if it was an option. Nearly owned a Jetta TDI (should have done it) and do own a F250 7.3L superduty diesel.

IF any of the manufactures come out with a 24+ MPH 1/2 ton truck or suv the 4runner is getting a forsale sign.
