DAY 1, and Intro
I figured I start this, and maybe someone will catch me making an error. If you read my intro, you know I know enough to get in trouble, and actually just like every other wrench, I think I know more than I do. You also know the history of the rig, which I will repost here along with pictures, if I can figure out how to upload them.
I am pretty sure I will not do anything someone else has not done, but I might give y'all a laugh while I do it. :lmao:
I live on the southwest corner of southern Utah. I have been building and working on Toyota 1st and 2nd gens since they came out. My first 1st gen had about 500,000 on it when I wrecked it, most of it off road around my farm in Arkansas
My most recent build was a 2nd gen extended cab truck, an 86, for my son. It was a real pain in the ass. It was one of the first efi, obd rigs, and had several thingys and gizmachi's I had never seen before. (now all removed) The Toyota dealer here thinks it may have been a California test vehicle. Of course both the dealer and I might be wrong, but have never seen one like it before. Believe it or not, it had OBD and no reader port, just a hand full of scattered ports, not list in the FSM. To get all the readings, I had to identify hand fill of different ports in various locations and the jumper them to check various readings using the odometer...what a learning curve. We rebuilt the engine and trans, did the brakes, from the peddle all the way through, replaced all the peripheral components, IE starter, alternator, power steering pump, and put bumpers on it, and painted it flat buckskin. By the way, if anyone has located a source for VSV's please share it, they hard as hens teeth to locate, even used.
"My current project is a 3rd gen 4runner, limited that was actually a spare wheeler we had for transporting our dogs, every day for a run, 6 miles south of here to the Arizona strip. Three years ago it was a pristine example of stock limited 4runner and very low mileage.
My stepson got into a financial bind, as did most of his generation in the recession, ended up divorced and without a ride. I lent him the toy. He destroyed it. No good deed goes unpunished.
I got it back because he got busted, and it was impounded, and one of cops called to give me a heads up. It looks like a bunch of dirty hippies, on meth, lived in it. (I will post pictures for comic relief later). Fortunately, I made him keep up with the PMS, and I paid the bills, so mechanically it is fairly sound.
Being born and raised in the desert, it is clean underneath as well. A few exterior battle scars to the plastic, but overall good condition on the outside, sans the broken windshield. (Likely what got him busted. Listen kids if your doing dope, don't drive with a crack across the windshield, because John Law will almost always assume you are on crack, and 9 times out of 10 he is right).
I have been reading and cogitating for several days on the restoration of the interior. Yesterday afternoon I went back and looked at it, for the first time in months, because I knew if I did not cool off I was going to shoot a 43 year doper. I discovered that the ignition is missing and chased parts and keys today. Tomorrow it gets an ignition and battery and get it moved from my storage yard into my shop. No motorcycle work for a while.
So I think I am going to have to remove the carpet, restore the headliner, and replace the driver's seat bottom. I will do this first, because it stinks so bad I cannot sit inside it. I don't think it is toxic, but I may be wrong. I will soundproof while I at it, likely the doors as well.
Then I move to the outside and run a full maintenance, including a tranny service and likely a timing belt, as he also lost the records, and cannot remember when I had it done(aging is tough). After that I will install a toytec ultimate lift, including uppers, then bumpers, sliders, and skid plates".
Well that is my into, thanks to all for the great information here, and I hope that in some small manner I can contribute.
So, my first major mistake on this rig occurred to today. I went to my storage yard and brought a battery from my shop...opps, reversed poles. Not a big deal, Walmart is a block away and the battery is an Ever Start three year full replacement warranty (what moron thought that was a good idea). So says me to self just maybe, it still covered.
I pull it and sure enough it is covered, until midnight tonight...They replace it with a five year warranty, (that can't possibly be related to economy of scale, so I make a mental note to avoid Walmart stock, light a smoke, sip the coffee and think well, it looks the day is starting out good.
I get the battery installed and place the negative terminal on and the doors lock, the alarm goes off, and you know where the keys were, both set even...Well A head on over to the industrial court and get one of the neighboring mechanics, who has entry equipment, (hmm, we used to call them burglary tools,) to come over and unlock. takes about ten minutes, but he won't charge me, so I shove a 20 in his pocket and told him to give it to his wife.
Then I take it for spin, the front end is toast, but no problem, its getting redone.
Tomorrow should be a better day...
