Winch Mount Options

Looking at different options for winch mounts not including a new full front bumper.

I know a lot of people have the SSS slimline hybrid series bumper but was wondering if anyone has seen or used Undercover Hidden Winch Systems before? (Undercover HWMS). The team doing the next (current now) Expedition Overland has them for their 4R. Thoughts?

I think BudBuilt still makes a hidden winch mount too. Similar to the undercover one.

I'd be interested in seeing what kind of price savings you can get on a group buy - less cutting than the SSS although in all reality the MSRP comparisons aren't drastically different (at least once you've factored in the cost of a winch as well...only a few hundred dollars out of $1,500-$2,000 total cost).

IMO a hidden winch mount is just "hidden". The SSS is a pronounced piece, especially with the hoop. Some people like that for the "look effect".

I liked my gen5+ (2014+) frontend look A LOT, anything else kinda ruins it for me.

Yes it is. 40 lbs if anyone is wondering, and replaces the aluminum bumper, so not a huge weight increase.

This is what I don't like about this design. You lose a good 8-10" of front end protection on both outside ends of the frame rails without the aluminum bumper in place.

Does anyone know how solutions like this compare to some of the recently-designed full front bumper replacements as well as the SSS solution when it comes to crash protection? I've seen the upcoming Demello, Shrockworks has theirs and I think CBI and 4x4 Labs are coming out (or have come out) with something as well. But form a safety perspective for those of us who still daily drive as well as hit the trails, how do all these options compare?

If anyone tells you they are better (or worse) than OEM then ask to see the calculations or crash test data. Even if the aftermarket bumper is in itself stronger who knows how that will mesh with all the other OEM safety systems. ARB is the only aftermarket company that even thinks about crash safety. Everyone else? They won't know until they crash. One of the guys with an ARB did hit a tree head on at speed. He walked away, his 4Runner was totaled and who knows if it was ARB or Toyota OEM safety that saved his butt. The real answer is nobody knows. If they say otherwise it is purely conjecture.

Which I wouldn't necessarily expect, they're all pretty good about using the "for offroad use" phrases. But I would imagine some try to leverage/leave in place some of the factory crush functions while others completely remove/bypass it?

Most, if not all, depend on the mounting location for the factory front crash bar to mount the bumper, winch mount, or whatsoever.

I have yet seen one that keep that in place. (Your imagination stays as imagination. :yield

the 14-15 bumper is smaller and doesn't look like you loose much coverage compared to the undercover. The Tacoma bumper pretty much ends at the mounts too, so they didn't lose anything with the winch mount. Hoping we get enough for the discount, It's about $700 without it.
