Window tint

Anybody know what % the factory window tint is on the T4R?

Any pics of your rides would be very helpful. Ideally pics taken from the side of the truck. Shots taken at an angle are always hard to judge. Please mention your % tint...I did see lots of examples in the sticky photo gallery, but most don't mention %'s. Thank you to anyone that posts pics! Very appreciated!

35% on the passenger/driver, 5% (limo tint) on all the back windows. Ill post more if you want this is all i could find for now. kinda a crappy pic. hope it helps.

im not 100 % sure the exact number of factory is but there around 25 to 30 %
i had just washed it but fronts are 35 and backs are stock.also sun roof shade was open and that makes a big differance making them look lighter.

and my 95 4runner had 20 on front 2 sides and 5% on back 2 side windows.

I first put 20% on my fronts and it matched great. I then stepped up and got a 5% brow. It helps a lot with the sun. After that I decided to do 45% on the windshield to help with my nightvision and also during the day. I like it a lot.

I can try and get pictures for you although I don't think mine will represent what you want to do with yours. Windshield tint is not legal.

if you look at my signature that is 35 percent (legal in alabama) on my front two windows, and 5 percent strip across front windshield. the rest of it is factory.

i plan on throwing 5 percent over all the remaining windows in the back like rdgt. does anybody running 5 percent have problems with it driving at night?

Thank you so much everybody. This really helps. I was guessing the factory was below 35%. Looks like I should go around 20%. (Of course 50% is legal where I live) I had 50 on my first car and 35 on my second and wasn't happy with either.

rdgt4r, is your 35 a smoke or something like that? It's been probably 10 years since I had windows tinted and vaguely remember there being choices like smoke and charcoal. Maybe it is just sunlight but I am a little thrown when looking at your 35 and blk runner00's 20% on the red one.

What I am shooting for is something darker than factory, but not super dark like 5%. I want the fronts tinted and figure I might as well do all the windows so everything matches.

well i posted a decently long post about window tint a while back but not sure where it got off to.

The 4runners do not come with factory tint. As you all know, tint is a dyed layer of film that is put on your windows. Our 4runners have their glass actually dyed 20% from the factory and then installed.

As stated before there are contributing factors to getting your front 2 windows to match your rears such as light coming from your front windshield as well as the sunroof.

To put it as simple as i can, to match the back windows you want a small(you can keep it legal(to the AS1 line)) tint banner on the front windshield which can legally be as dark as you want it as long as it doesn't go below the AS1 line, combined with 15% on your front two windows.

I am not going to go into legality issues with tint.

quick description of percents that tint comes in:

50%: clear, but still 100% UV protection
35%: Legal limit in most states. You can still see through 35% but it is noticeable at night and cloudy days that you have tint.
20%: Allows you to see a silhouette of a person along with their facial features.
15%: Allows you to see a silhouette with no facial features.
5%: basically blacked out unless lights are shining into the windshield or lights are on inside the vehicle.

All of these descriptions vary depending on weather and lighting.

source: i have tinted windows for 4 years and have tinted my 4runner windows through every tint and more. I currently have 5% over 5% on the front 2 and 5% over the factory dye on the rear, 5% banner on front windshield. I love privacy and don't have to worry about seeing at night since all the windows go down.

As broncosi said, if you just want to match the factory rear, 20% is the closest you are going to get. I have mine done 20% on the front and I have the 20% windshield banner as well. Here are some pictures I took a while back for clemsonfan....

To each his own of course, but for what it's worth I would never go any darker than this. I sometimes have trouble seeing out the front two windows at night when turning (mostly only in the country and on sharp turns). It's never a problem, just makes me aware that the tint is there. Yes, all the windows go down, but in Ohio we have these things called rain and cold weather and its not always an option to be rolling the windows up and down.

Wow sick burn dood. Way to catch my totally stupid misread.

...Anyways, the guy who tinted my windows has been tinting for WAAAAY longer than 4 years and has tinted WAAAY more cars than you have, and now owns his own business in Dayton, Ohio tinting windows of multi-million dollar houses, while doing some cars on the side. I will trust anything he says, and as you can see my fronts match damn-near perfect. In fact, I would say if anything they are a bit darker than the rears and 15% would be too dark.

If you know as much about tint as you say you do, I'm sure will find his credentials more than fitting to tint my windows to match the rear. If not, just ask your boss.

Sloan, I can't speak for any windows other than the fronts. My rear windows are all factory and the factory tint is much easier to see out of than the film tint that is on the fronts. Personally I like mine to match, so since I wouldn't go darker on the front I would not on the rears either, but thats speaking on aesthetics only.

Sorry if I got a little heated. I took your statement as cocky and arrogant, but you know how things can come across wrong when typed.

Rears are about 32% to 35% but they are tinted in the glass so they look a little darker (25%).

In Ohio you can only do 50% on the front so that is what I have. I got pulled over way to much with the 20% I had on previously. (although it matched the rear pretty well, maybe just a hair darker.)

My windshield strip is 5%.

I only used the best 3M tint they had available, my 50% front looks alot like all the 35% tint that you guys have on the front. Maybe its just my picture, IDK. I am pleased with mine because it keeps me legal, provides UV protection and privacy, and I did not have to retint the back darker which would surely scatch with the amount of stuff and people I put in my 4Runner. (kids, dogs, gear, etc.)

Not yet (Knock on wood). I've only had it a week.

I really like it though.

Here's the specs on my tint with a few photos:


Entire Windshield: 35%
Front Driver & Passenger glass: 35%
All Remaining glass: 20% over factory tinted glass


I've often considered removing the 35% tint on the front two windows and tinting them to 20% instead...I just have not gotten around to it.

And NO, in the 2yrs I've had my 4Runner tinted, I have never had any issues with law enforcement about my tint.
