windshield replacement

Hello all,

This is my first post. We have a 2007 4Runner Limited 2WD. Had the windshield replaced yesterday. Here's my question. The original windshield had this type of foil, or metal kind of tape attached to it that ran to the mirror - and looked like it connected there. On the new windshield, the tech just cut a piece of this strip (about 3 inches square) and put it on there. Everything appears to be working - what was that strip? I also had a 2002 4Runner, and don't remember it having that strip. I called our dealer's service department, and he was clueless...

Thanks in advance!

The 2002 4Runner definitely does not have that, the mirror on the 3rd gen (as well as the 1st and 2nd, I believe) is attached to the headliner and not the windshield. I looked at mine (2003) just now and could not figure out what you are referring to. There is a piece of opaque, black material sandwhiched between the layers of glass that is roughly the same shape as the rearview mirror mount and the wire going down to it, but that is all.
