I'll have to disagree with your disagreement. ;)

I've used Bosch Icons on all our vehicles and just installed them on the 4R. I find them better in all conditions, but particularly in extreme cold weather.

I wonder, is there a Bosch Icon replacement for the rear wiper?

On a related note, if it hasn't already been mentioned, it is a good idea to keep a spare driver's side wiper blade in the car in case of a failure in bad weather.

They don't fail, they just freeze up. on my first 5th gen I ran Boschs and a few other brands. I went back to the OEM because they lasted longer and wiped better.
Just put new Toyota refills in last week.

The wipers on my wife's MDX tore earlier this year in icy conditions. Fortunately it was passenger side but if it had been driver's side we would have been in a real mess.

Carrying a spare wiper blade is cheap insurance IMO.

YMMV.
 
I realize this is probably a strange thing to make a first post about but I'm looking to get into a 4Runner in the next month or two hopefully and had a question about the de-icer in the front windshield. I currently have a Wrangler and this winter I've been fighting a frustrating, losing battle on finding wipers that don't plug up with ice and become useless. Part of it is the massive amount of ice that forms near the driver's A-pillar. As I understand it, the 4Runner's system has heating elements running up that part of the glass. Does the heating element do anything to help with this when you're driving or is it mostly do get the blades free of the glass when clearing off the vehicle as was mentioned above? I had to stop 4 times today on the way home from work to clear the windshield and aside from being a giant hassle, it isn't terribly safe either so I'm hoping the heater might work a bit to prevent this.

Heated windshield

I don't know how to quote:doh:. from MikeNH question, just learning this posting thing. But I think the heated windshield for the wipers is a big help in keeping the ice build up off when it's snowing.

Good to know. I've lived in the north my entire life and never had anything that iced up as bad as the Wrangler. I've tried the beam type wipers, the old school rubber wrapped winter blades and the normal metal framed ones. My only guess is that the Jeep's glass is so upright it makes it more prone to buildup. The Wrangler is going to be gone in a month or two anyhow. I just need the damn snow to stop so I can get it back to stock and then it's off to the Toyota dealer.

The heated wiper area works when parked, not so much when driving. Go back and read my first post.
 
Do you guys use the heated wiper option much? I have heard of guys cracking their windshield using it (probably due to cracks/chips in extreme cold). I'm kinda gun-shy to use it but we hardly experience snow anyhow here.

All the time when warming it up. Pretty sure Toyota didn't put a windshield breaker option. Chances are the few who experienced this had other problems.

Trico Ice blades work for me. They have built in Teflon into the rubber which makes them quiet and clean quite nicely.
