Wireless CarPlay

Does anyone know if you can use CarPlay without connecting a USB cable?

I just got a 21 TRD Pro and seems like CarPlay only works with a USB cable.

You'll have to purchase an adapter/dongle to get this. Just know that it's always possible an apple update could break compatibility with it.

I have the wireless dongle, but if you try to Pause/Play/Skip etc, there's a noticeable 1-2 second delay that was annoying enough for me to just plug it in now when I want to use CarPlay. It also takes ~30 seconds or so to actually connect to your phone after startup.

Wireless CarPlay also seems to use the battery pretty heavily... so for short trips its not too bad, but if you need to keep your phone charged on a longer you'll want to plug it in anyway. I have an after-market wireless charger in my center console, and it just wouldn't charge it fast enough to keep up with wireless CarPlay most of the time. (I've heard battery life is a common issue across the board with wireless CarPlay, even heard this from a new Tundra review!)

I don’t use wireless CarPlay so I can be wire free. I use it so I can fast charge and use CarPlay at the same time!

The CarPlay port is the only USB in the vehicle that does not fast charge.

Have the 2023 models been updated to wireless CarPlay?

No the 4Runners have not been updated. They most likely won't be this gen. Some other Toyotas finally are except for the Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry and Sienna.

Also to get back to the original topic, I have the Motorola MA1 wireless dongle and that has been absolutely fantastic. It does take about 30 seconds to connect, same as the cars bluetooth, and there is very minimal delay with song changes or commands.
