Wiring trouble on my 01 4Runner SR5

My dog chewed the entire wiring harness that runs to my transmission in an attempt to catch a rat that found its way into my engine compartment. I've put all wires that weren't duplicates back together. Then used a multimeter to check continuity and connect the rest of the wires. I fired it up and the check engine light, vsc off, and vsc trac lights came on. I drove it a short distance and found it won't go into four wheel. According to the wiring diagram the black with red stripe wires are for 4x4 so I switched those figuring I may have messed that up. After, all warning lights shut off but it still wouldn't go into four wheel. I decided to drive it to a main road and after getting it up to 70 the same three warning lights came on. Is this caused by the same wiring mix up that's causing the 4x4 not to work? Can anyone tell me which color wires turn the 4x4 on? Also which plug on the transmission controls the 4x4? I attached a photo of where the wires were chewed (right were the wires come down and meet the transmission) and of the plug that I suspect controls the 4x4.

Well, the answer to your first question is complex, but it is right on the third page of the wiring diagram under System Outline (attached, 2002 and 2001 should be identical.)

Lots of things have to happen for 4wd to engage, and there are two separate major events. 1) the TC has to engage the front propeller shaft, and 2) the front diff actuator has to engage the front shaft to the wheels. On '01-'02 both are electric.

Is 1) not happening or 2) not happening--or neither? What is the light doing?

just my 2 cents but anytime working with this type wiring I recommend soldering the wiring harness back together. There is a possibility those wire splice connection could be causing a fluctuation in voltage to your components tripping your warning lights.

Thanks for the quick response guys. Answering to the first reply, I'm convinced it's not engaging either and the light is just flashing continuously. I know the sound it makes when it locks into 4wheel and I'm not hearing anything. As far as my use of butt connectors goes, this is just temporary until I get it working properly. I plan to solder after she's working right. Thanks again!
