Education is key my friend. Nobody can ever take that away. Good luck and if it's any consolation, a lot of us (me) were broke and hopeless at your age too. If they would have had the internet 40 years ago I would have typed a similar story but without the kids yet.

This is good advice. But with that said, not all college degrees are created equal.

Ahhh, education is not all college either lol. A trade learned in vocational school, skills learned in the military, apprenticeships etc. I had that advice beat into me from my grandparents. Education comes in all forms and is the only thing that cannot be taken away which is why it is so valuable.
You can break up with your girlfriend, lose a loved one, have your house repossessed, have your wages garnished, investments that go broke, wreck your car and everything else but what you know, and have learned, will be with you always to help you throughout life.

I agree but you do need one to make good money, live in a safe neighborhood and possibly own your own house one day.

I'm not saying everyone needs a BS to do that -- no way but even the skills jobs such as mechanics or plumbers still require some type of education and training. If you can't read a schematic or speak even basic English then you will be hindered in the pursuit of a decent paycheck. So yeah everything comes back to education.

I myself have no certifications and my highest level of schooling is the 10th grade, but I do own my own house bought with my own money

But in going along what you said though, I did "train" myself in various trades until I found one I liked, so I hope I didn't come across as saying that you don't need to do anything to succeed. You reap what you sow.

Some think you can skip school, not try or learn about anything, and then be justified to complain about their sad existence.

Then there's some that think you can get education and then everything afterwards is gravy and you can coast through life with a big salary.

Well point is, don't worry so much about the piece of paper or what's on your nametag/door/signage/etc. but worry more that you're working hard at something.

When I owned my own Business, I interviewed many College graduates, and even hired a few, who turned out to not be qualified to watch paint dry.

Somehow they had a piece of paper saying they had graduated from College, but were completely lacking in common sense, or the ability to complete a fairly simple task. A sense of entitlement seemed to be common among those people.

That's not to say that all people with a Degree fall into the useless category. I was just amazed at how prevalent the problem was.

So as a former Employer; A piece of paper means very little to me.

What matters is if you have common sense. That you are a hard worker. That you are capable of completing any task which your job requires. That you are honest. Also that you don't have the attitude that the world owes you a living, just because you have a Degree.



OP, if owning a Fabrication Shop is your dream job, I'd work towards realizing that goal.

Wow I really didnt think that this thread would get as much response as it is getting. In regards to education, I think it is very very important, but i think where you get it from is not as important.

Doing what you love for a living would be great and if everyone could do it im sure they would love too but in the big picture of life, if everyone did what they loved then who would do all the mundane factory work that is required at this point in time. Do you think that anyone lives their life to work in a coal mine? Maybe but probably not, but you know what, it has to be done. Same as everything else that we take for granted and that we demand to be cheap.

I understand that in life we have to do things in life we don't want to even as a career. Why do you think people feel like slaves at work? Because we are except for the select few who run everything. Now that's not to say you cant enjoy your job but you will still be making someone elses dreams come true before yours.

If someone chooses to stay in a job they don't like, because of some sense of Civic Duty, or because they think they can't do any better, that's their choice.


Starting your own Business is much harder than any job you'll have working for someone else. That's a the biggest hurdle that most have to starting their own business. It's simply easier to go to work for someone else, and then go home and think about anything but your job, until you have to go punch-in again.

As a Business Owner, you never stop thinking about your job. It's always there 24/7/365. During that time in my life I ate antacids like they were candy. However the reward of having some success while working for yourself, makes all the hard work and sacrifice worthwhile.

My philosophy is this...If I wanna play hard I got to work hard no matter what. Pay my dues and pray that God blesses me my family and those less fortunate and thank him for what I am fortunate to have.ray2: And bless that 4runner of mine!:rockon:
