Hey Jake, just a word of advice--unless you (or whoever your friend in the foreground is) enjoy being sliced and diced, I'd get the heck away from those winch lines. If either one of those snaps, that guy is gonna get a face full of frayed cable at dangerously high speed. Not good practice, friend.
Unless they are synthetic
This is what happens when I say "im backing up to help him" she says "no dont"
We were trailing on Mesa Ridge Road behind Colorado Springs of Old Stage Rd. We were traveling on a 2-3 in snow packed/icy road with 6 vehicles. I was leading the pack with my 06 4Runner when about 2 miles into it I realize that the second truck was having an issue with traction. So as a nice person I thought I could help him out and back up. As I was backing up I got a little too close to the edge of the trail. (imagine, 6-7 Ft wide snow trail (one way traffic only) cliff/mountain side to the left and 50-75ft drop off on the edge with trees to poke you on the way down) My front right tire started to slide to the edge a bit, So I corrected and tried to move further back with my tire at full counter steer. At this point my wife is telling me “no don’t back up” , this encouraged me to prove her wrong and make it through this. I eased on the gas once more and felt the 4Runner “lurch” right, once that happened my back left became SUPER LIGHT. I stopped all actions put the E-brake on moved the gear to park and got out of the truck. As soon as I disembarked my truck I realized what happed and how much S**t I got my self in.
Notice the lower right side of the photo, you can see the tire tracks slide 3-4ft to the passanger side (ie cliff of DOOM :violin

So my first reaction was "I need to anchor in to something”, that anchor was 50 ft away. So I run the line to the tree and hoped my truck would stay until I secured it.

My fellow trail mates realized something that I didnt, My back left was not touching the ground!. So they hooked my hitch to a tree so prevent me from sliding further outward when I which out.
