And no, I don't mean the Yakima or Thule hitch mount contraptions that mount to their bike racks and stick out three feet to the rear.
It's a pain to access boards and skis from the roof rack especially on lifted rigs.
I searched for any kind of rack solution similar to the racks/boxes you see on gondolas and resort buses. I couldn't find anything.
I designed one to hold four boards...basically a 28"x5.5" box with slots for the boards. It would be constructed with 1/8" aluminum with perforated bottom for drainage. The top edges can be covered with metal infused heavy duty trim for scratch protection and loops to run a cable and lock for security.
A local fab shop looked at my drawings and said they'd come back to me with an estimate incl. with powdercoat. One thing they're going to change is the location of the hitch mount. I asked them to do an offset design so snowboards don't block the license plate. If this is an affordable solution, I will still mount this to a swing away hitch arm to allow opening of the tailgate.
Box design would be similar to this.
Would people be interested in something like this? What would be any concerns that would make this less appealing than the folding arms typical of Yakima and Thule? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
