Would you buy a 98 LTD 2WD 230K for $1800?

Found one near for the price of 1800.
Leather interior.
Good body (no dents) and good paint (no peeling)
Seats good with one rip on passenger side

What's stopping me is the 2WD.

How good the 2WD is? and would you buy a 2WD 4runner?

The main purpose of buying/considering this is to save my 97 4runner 4x4 using as a mall crawler by my wife.

So your main purpose is to take away your 97 from your wife from using it at the mall, effectively replacing it with this 98 to be used at the mall?

If so, I think you answered your question. You wont need 4wd at the mall, so for $1800, why not? I paid more in taxes alone for my 5th gen.

I have an 02 2wd, and the only difference is the unpowered front wheels. I only use it around town as a second "beater" truck and runs to Home Depot. Its just as capable on asphalt as my 5th gen 4wd.

What should be stopping you is not the 2wd, but maintenance history or lack of? How is that department?

Seems like a good deal to me if you're trying to keep your other one from being driven so much. Seems like a good use of $1800 if all checks out decently.

Agreed - if it's all on-road, you still get all the T4Rness you need! Vet it on ToyotaOwners and Carfax and then cop it.

seems like a no brainer unless of bad maintenance records and history. I would so make this the mall crawler for your wife and rhino line the rear and make it a utility vehicle for home depot runs!

Ask yourself Would i ever need the 4wd? If no then 2wd will never bother you. As many have said for simple everyday use and for the wife I would consider what the maintenance history looks like. Also if there is any serious rust on the underside. Just remember your wife will call you if something breaks..

That's a great price for a CA 4Runner. Those of the sort of 4Runners I fix up and flip lol.

The 2wd will be just fine.

I did 50 miles of the Mohave rd in my 2wd with no problem or need for 4x4. 2wd and a good driver and you can get into and out of most places.

Well... it has...

Probably engine rear main seal is leaking
Excessive steering play
carpet needs to be replaced
Excessive play at the shift lever
bearings shot in both front wheels. Rear OK
Bald tires
Dent/scratches on hood. No paint is peeling
Timing belt/kit required (no history)
Lower ball joints


Noticed new valve cover gaskets. Starts right out. Engine is smooth and throttle response is fantastic.

I am thinking... What do you all think?

Sounds like a couple thousand in repairs upgrades needed.
Is the lower control arm mount damaged? Looks like it hit something pretty good to do that and dent/scrape the skid.
I'd probably walk unless I could get it for less than $1500.
With repairs, drive it for a year and your better off vs having a car payment of $300-$400 per month.

Realistically maybe $2k in repairs at most and $1,800.. That's still not a bad deal for $3,800

Yeah, I thought so. $1500 of mechanical repairs.
I offered 1500 but seller wants 1700. Will see.
