Would you buy a used 5th Gen Rental?

Looking at a 2013 5th Gen SR5 4X4, 3rd row, with 25K miles. Dealership is asking $29K

Would you consider purchasing a rental? If so, what areas of the vehicle would you inspect?

I've historically been hesitant to buy a rental, but the price is right.

Let me know your thoughts.

Would you buy a rental, period? When you were younger, how did you treat rental cars? If you answer these questions honestly, you'll probably come to the correct conclusion.

There's a thread about this already that dismisses the "sky is falling" attitude towards a rental. This is a 4x4 however, so someone may have had a good time with it or incorrectly activated the 4wd features, albeit unlikely.
 
While the mileage is a little high for a normal 1 year old vehicle I will easily put 25,000 highway miles on mine this year. Those are typically the least abusive on a vehicle. What kind of warranty is the dealer offering? And something to bear in mind is most younger folk who will thrash a rental car probably don't opt for the more expensive mid size SUV as their choice. And when I was younger I treated any rental I had like it was on loan from my mom. But maybe I had a more responsible upbringing.....
 
No I wouldn't. If it was abused too badly something might break after warranty and repairs might be expensive. It's too much risk for me.
 
It was a rental in the United States, particularly the SouthWest, then f()k no!

If it was a rental on a very small island with only one road and no offroad trails or beach access, then consider it...

A fleet vehicle on the other hand you have at least a little better odds that it may have been cold started but never beaten, if the price is right and good maintenance records...probably better odds than 65% of used car dealers.

You should always consider the price may be "right" for a reason ;):

I would not worry about it too much. 25k is nothing and there is really not that much you can do to hurt them Just get the service records.... If it is accident free... it should be fine.
 
The last thing I need is a rental company trying to jerk me around on vehicle damage or repairs. I drive mine in a "normal" way. Of course I give it a bit of juice here and there to see how it performs.

Perhaps see if you can take to a 3rd party for inspection and ask about extra warranty to be safe. Might still have he original tires. See if you can inspect the tread wear to give an indication of how it was driven.
 
When I purchased a rental in the past I did it through a Toyota dealership. If there were no obvious defects on examination then I would ask the dealership to make it a certified vehicle, pay the extra surcharge and have the security of a 7/100,000 Toyota warranty.

I can't say I didn't beat on rentals when I was younger...

It looks like it was a rental in Orlando, so probably family rental to take to Disney.

I thought of the fact that most renters would be families and not kids abusing the vehicle too. SUV's are pretty pricey to rent.

I forgot to mention it is Toyota Certified and comes with the 7/100,000 warranty.

We're going to look at it tonight so I'll know more then.

Funny you should say Orlando rental cars... just returned my camaro at Orlando airport. It was a blast shutting of traction control, using the paddle shifters and red lining the thing every chance I got. Oh and the neutral drops are fun too. Next week I will probably get the new limited durangos they got in and test their 4x4 capability at the beach

Went and looked at the rig last night... definitely beat to piss. No surprise I guess. Front and rear bumpers obviously repainted ("Toyota Certified" doesn't guarantee bumper collisions). Interior scratched to hell and missing trim pieces, scratches and dents all over the exterior. I always said I'd never buy a rental, but for some reason I got starry eyed as soon as this one came up. After 5 seconds of seeing the rig, I came to my senses. What do you know... it looked like a truck that had 200 families treating it like a jungle gym for a year.

What I didn't realize was that we can get a new 2014 with more features (Navigation etc) and the third row for $33K out the door! Have never purchased a new car before... but it's a no brainer this time.
