My brother in law just payed 7k for an 01 with 230k miles all stock and well maintained.

Carmax the company and Carfax different. Google see if he has a "CARMAX" that buys and sells cars near him. You make a appointment they evaluate the vehicle and give you a cash offer with details of a basic inspection. Its free even if you do not sell it to them. They will note any seat rips, dents, etc etc. Its not a full on mechanical inspection, but they test drive it and run a diagnostic on it.

Again its free and you dont need to take the offer but you get more details in writing before you drive to inspect it. Ive used them when dealers gave my low-ball offers on trade ins.

Yea I know they are different I got my thoughts confused. Let's try this again. I ran a carfax myself can back with the before mentioned data and it basically told me 4 owners, the mileage, a few accidents, and the basic service.

Now Tuesday I went to Carmax for my own truck to get an appraisaland let's just say the one here is BS. I know there is about 5k worth of work needed to be done to it and they said it was mechanically sound and runs and drives perfect. I don't really trust the one here but they offered me exactly what I thought my truck was worth for trade in value.

Carmax is a chain and you will always find a bad apple. Ive used them when selling cars to know how much to ask and trading in cars for dealer negations. But for free they do give you a lot on a appraisal. Very cookie cutter but useful. Most people dont know CarMax was started and owned by Circuit City.
