Would you install used ball joints?

Guy is parting out a 1999 runner. His LBJ have 10K miles ( claimed ) of on road driving, no lift. He did post a picture of his truck and it looks to be sitting stock. I can get the parts for $300 cheaper if I buy them from him ( nice ) but am a little nervous about installing a used part that is so crucial. I spoke with him and explained my concerns and he said he is very aware of the LBJ issue on the 3rd gens and assured me he would not lie about use or mileage. They are OEM as well.

I assume you are just going to get the control arms and change the whole thing. big question is do you think you can trust the guy. if you can find a way to see the part #s you can identify if they are oem.

The other issue is were they damaged in the wreck? So there are the issues but if you are satisfied they are ok then do it.

www.toyotapartsdirect.ca has them right now for $171/each (CAD).

Personally, I wouldn't mess around with used parts for anything suspension/steering related.

Get new, get OEM, and forget about it.

1- JOINT ASSEMBLY, LOWER BALL, FRONT LEFT . JOINT,BALL [43340-39465]
1- JOINT ASSEMBLY, LOWER BALL, FRONT RIGHT . JOINT,BALL [43330-39585]
8- BOLT . BOLT [90080-10066]
 
It's not worth it, in my opinion. Even if he's being honest about the 10k (no way to prove it), you're still taking a gamble. If they're bad, you have to redo it all plus buy new ones. You'll also likely be wondering if they actually only have 10k miles once they're installed. For the peace of mind, I'd just get new ones.
 
Truck was not wrecked, blew transmission so he is taking the motor and a number of parts to donate to another truck; and parting out this one. He sent me a couple pictures and the joints are still black, no rust
 
Would I wear someone else's used shoes or underwear? Nope, and one should follow the same creed concerning used LBJs.

So why isn't he taking them to the next truck, cause unless it's his truck with a known history he's going to have to get new ones himself...
 
I'd concur. Spend the cash and buy new ones.

I'd check with [MENTION=60263]Roman[/MENTION] at Cool Springs or camelback toyota.

My parts guy got mine for me at just over 100 bucks each (gotta love mil discount and preferred customer pricing)
 
OP is in Canada, so while camelback would be cheapest, they will not ship to Canada.

OP, don't look at Camelback as it will only depress you. Get them from toyotapartsdirect.ca as SpidermanGeek has mentioned earlier. They are the cheapest I have found in Canada but they are slow about getting things to you. Plan well in advance.

ok. I didnt know that camelback wont ship to canada. Kinda dumb.

Check with [MENTION=56719]Romano[/MENTION]rtiz (cant remember his full username....look him up per the weathertech group buy)

He's a cool parts guy and can probably get you a good price with shipping to Canada.
 
Not ball joints. Other parts sure.

But part of the reason is the chances of destroying the ball joint taking it out is pretty high. Or at least messing it up.

If he's a Toyota dealer, likely not. As far as I am aware, US dealers will no longer ship to Canada. Toyota of Dallas, and Camelback will for sure not. They both USED to but stopped a few years back.

If anyone has info to the contrary I would love to know!
 
Camelback will not ship to Canada.

Amazon.com will ship, but the shipping / taxes / duty is $100; add the exchange and its the same price as buying them in Canada.
 
Can you physically go look at them and check them out? While I'm generally in agreeance with the opinion that you should only use NEW suspension parts, my inner cheap skate has had to use JY parts in years past just to keep a POS car going for a few months before I could afford to buy new parts or to keep the old auto-x/track car going on the cheap.

Maybe the slightly used parts are in perfect condition, if you can grab the parts and thoroughly check them over and they seem ok, then offer maybe 25% of the value of a new part.
