Would you pay new 4R money for this?

Having just gone through a 2002 4WD SR5, I can say that most parts are still available. Not cheap, but available.

And by "gone through" I mean suspension, brakes, bearings, seals, rack bushings, '99 tall springs on all 4 corners, exhaust, 02 sensors, gas tank, filler, evap system, etc. If I touched it I replaced it. All Toyota OEM (ok, other than Bilstein 4600s + energy suspension poly bushings). Took me 5 months.

I have all coolant system ready to put in this weekend. Again, going Toyota OEM. All parts available.

Next will be timing belt which I'm sure is still available. After that I am sure there will be more to do.

Little clips here and there are showing as discontinued, but it's not bad (yet).

I'm new to the 4runner world but so far really love this truck.

It could be way, way worse. Someone with a better memory than I would have to chime in as there are definitely some notable parts to mention

The most notable (and critical) part that seems to be out of production that I found during my rebuild is

“Solenoid Assembly, Four Wheel Drive Control” (Toyota PN 8544035040)

for the ADD system for some pre-2001 4x4 trucks. It’s two solenoids and a VSV, and the 4WD/2WD transitions will not work without this component, unless you defeat the ADD system and do a manual hub conversion. (You could also go under the hood and switch the vacuum hoses by hand each time you wanted to engage/disengaged 4WD.)

These solenoids rarely fail, but mine did. I had to pull one from a Tacoma.

But for such an important part that was on so many years of both 4Runners and Tacomas, I wonder if it’s truly out of production forever, or if it’s temporary, or maybe the part number was superseded or something?

The availability of parts has really made me want to build a Supra some day. 3rd gen 4runner and 4th gen Supra is my ideal garage.

Yes! I like that Toyota brought back the Supra as it's been way too long since Toyota made a true sports car and let's be honest, the Lexus lineup has been nothing but cushy, heavy luxury sedans disguised as performance vehicles for years. What I don't like about the new Supra as it's more BMW than Toyota and looks way too much like the Z4. Can anyone tell beyond the badge and the headlights what is different???

To add to this thread though, our 4Runners are getting rarer by the day. Rust is taking its toll in many places in the country and these things are getting totalled left and right. That leaves rust-free areas been scouted out as people look for 'nostalgic' 4Runners that remind them of their childhood or first vehicle they owned. Combined with the great reliability, availability of parts and 4x4 capability people just want them. Look at the Tacoma and Tundra markets as well as they are even higher.

I have been telling my wife for 10 years I'd never sell my 4Runner. There may come a day though when valuations for these eclipses what I could do with the funds elsewhere. I'm nowhere near that point though as I'd have to be able to trade my 4Runner for a brand new SUV for me to even be close.

Biggest difference is everything, nothing is based on the pile of crxp z4, this is engineered to toyota specs for longevity And performance. It took bmw a while to achieve the longevity part of it, should help them too.

The newest update brings it closer to bmw's software allowing more tail swag around turns, fun fun....

Huh? Most body panels are different, but it is a BMW engine, transmission, chassis, suspension, etc. Built in the same factory as the Z4 by Magna Steyr.

Similar to the FRS/GT86/GR86 vs. BRZ. That one is a Subaru engine (with some Toyota fuel injection parts), chassis, suspension with an Aisin rear diff and transmissions, built in a Subaru factory. Oh, yeah, some of the interior parts are from other Toyotas too.

GR Yaris and Corolla, on the other hand... That's Toyota.

Definitely recall seeing this a couple weeks ago - that's a good one for sure.
That could be the case, but at any rate I find it absolutely bizarre Toyota figured they'd stop making those but continue to make, say, the hood scoop and it's components

Thanks! Definitely a journey, but was pleased that yesterday I brought it in for new tires, alignment + state inspection and it passed. Not bad considering when I bought it it had all dashboard lights on at once, no brakes, broken sway bar, etc. etc. ... Great truck but lots of deferred maintenance. Next up cooling system (runs cool now but I don't trust old radiator or hoses).

And good point on parts availability. I haven't yet had to change out non-maintenance items such as transfer case, etc. There are likely more items NLA than I am aware of.
