Wrangler Duratrac vs. AT Revo 3

Hello.

I need new tires and thinking about upgrading rims as well. Currently, I have the stock rims with Bridgestone AT Revo 2.

I want to get the matte black TRD pro rims and get either the AT Revo 3 or Duratracs.

My concern with the Duratracs is road noise. Can anyone advise on how loud they are at highway speeds? Please?

Is there a tire in between these two that might give the aggressive look with out a lot of road noise?

I’ve also run the Duratracs on a previous Tacoma. While they were very good in the snow and off road, I found them a bit noisy on the highway and they killed my mileage. For all around use, I’ve been pleased with the Revo 3’s.

Mine came with p series duratrac 265 70 17 and I've put 1200 miles on them with no sound issues. My wife also has not complained so thats a good sign.

Duratracs are very noisy. At about 10,000 miles the noise began increasing. By 30,000 when I couldn't stand it anymore they were so loud I could no longer use the hands free mode for talking on the phone. That was when I got rid of them. I run Ridge Grapplers now and they are remarkably quieter at 26,000 miles so far. (I was running 285/70/17 for reference)
As far as performance goes the Duratracs are fantastic in wet/snow/ice conditions and are relatively light weight for an aggressive AT tire. Also be aware there have been many complaints of weak sidewalls in the Duratracs. (I never had issues with this) Unfortunately the noise trade off was too much for me. The Ridge Grapplers preform nearly was well without the noise.

Sorry I have no experience with the Revos so I can't compare to that

I have had 3 sets of Revos on 3 different 4Runners and really like them. I want to upgrade my rims and am nervous the tires won't look aggressive enough for the rims. Based on what MSU shared, it should look good.

Duratracs are a softer rubber compound compared to most AT tires. They are also great in the snow because of that. I'm guessing you don't get a whole lot of snow in NC, so I would recommend a different tire.

I've owned 3 sets of Duratracs. They key is to rotate every 5-7000 miles. If you don't they get noisy. They also are worn out before 50k miles.

I now run Falken Wildpeaks. Been very happy with them. Aggressive, quiet and great in snow (but wearing much better than my Duratracs did). I've had 3 sets, but only about 40k miles (put them on a 4runner and sold it after 10k miles and now run on both of my Land Cruisers).

The Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx also get good reviews, and have an aggressive look.

We get one or 2 snows a year. Rain is a bigger issue. The Revos have handled that pretty well.

I would also check out the new varieties of Cooper AT3s. The 4S, the LT, and the XLTs. They all have great reviews

I had a set of Duratracs on my Tacoma and even after rotating, they started making noise. Wet road traction while accelerating was laughable. I managed one tire fire into 3rd gear before the supercharger but empty bed vs SUV. Offroad traction was awesome though and of course they look great.

I'm on my seconds set of Duratracs (C load) but I wouldn't say they are too noisy. There is some noise from the tires but I don't find it excessive. Never had any issues talking on hands free phone, but I rotate tires every time I change oil and keep them inflated at 36-38 PSI.

Hey, I am glad to see a lot of satisfaction with the Revo 3's. I have been running 275/65/16 Revo 2's on my 3rd gen. They have been good, am noticing some slipping on wet roads now. They are about 50% worn, but 6 years old so I am getting ready to replace. I have been eyeing the Revo 3's, and the KO2's. Have heard the KO2's can be poor in wet conditions, that isn'tan option for me if it is the case. Drive almost exclusively on pavement, some rain, some snow, but want some offroad capability as we are looking to start doing some off roading.

So, should I get the Revo 3's, or should I consider something else? Priorities are well rounded performance in all conditions, with the best offroad capabilities you can get and still have on road performance and comfort. $$ not an issue as tires are important and the 4Runner doesn't see a lot of mileage.

Sounds like your driving is similar to mine. I’ve been very satisfied with the Revo 3 and at this point, would purchase them again.

I've got Duratracs and happy with them at only 3000 miles. So far they've done great in the mud and snow. For road noise, I can hear them, but it's not loud. Just enough to remind me that I have off road tires, which is a good thing.

I find it amazing that the same tire can get total opposite reviews. One says they are very quiet while another can't talk on the phone with them. One guy says they are great wet and another days they are laughable. Strange I say. Lol

Well I guess I'll find out soon enough. While the Duratracs weren't me first choice I picked up a set of LT285/70R17 D that were takes offs with less then 1000 miles on them for $500. Just couldn't pass up that deal. May love them, may hate them but we will see.

I've had my Duratracs on my 4runner for about 3000 miles so far. I've had the chance to test them out in snow (both on highway and out in the fields. Even some mountain back roads) and mud. I've no complaints about them, and I really like the tread design of them. I've experienced no hydroplaning in them, but that may be partly to responsible driving in heavy rain. As for road noise, yes they are a bit louder than the Dunlops they come stock with, but I've been able to use my Hands-Free with no problem. At 70-75 MPH, I don't really hear them unless I specifically try to listen to them. Note: I've lost 20% of my hearing so that may be a factor. Thanks Iraq!

Could you please clarify "wearing much better than my Duratracs"?

I have been very satisfied with the performance of the SL Wildpeaks but the first 2/32nds go in no time (4,000 miles; six tires total, same story). Then wear improves tremendously but the bottom line is that by 10,000 miles one is already at 10/32 and under. My oldest two are at 25,300, at 6.5-7/32nds and showing a lot of offroad punishment with several tread blocks on each chunking.

The Duratracs and Ultraterrains start at 16/32 (Wildpeak is 14 advertised but 13 at best measured at home). Do they really wear even faster per 1/32?

I know for a fact my KO2s in LTD were wearing much more evenly, actually starting slowly and then getting to 4,000 per 1/32. The Wildpeak is there now, but following a very uneven trajectory, starting awful, then getting strong (wear wise).
