man sucks Sorry for your loss dude but atleast you are ok right? cars can be replaced lives can't. i saw a hit and run last night coming home and i was pretty shocked by it. i called the cops on the guy in the mustang that was fleeing the scene.
 
Dang. Sorry to hear. Most important thing is that everyone is ok. Hopefully that is the case.
 
I dunno what's worse.. the fact you wrecked your 4Runner or the 1st thought that popped in your head was "I gotta make a post on t4r" :D

All jokling aside, I hope everything is alright and everyone involved made it out ok.
 
Update. So i left it in a parking lot by the "crash site" for the night. Heres how the wreck happened: i was driving the posted speed limit, following the rules of the road. I come over the top of a hill, check my rearview mirror, and the next thing i know im 20 feet away from a stopped car. Going from 40 mph to 0, especially with the brakes i had, was impossible. I slammed on the brakes, slowed a little and rear ended a Jeep Patriot. The driver of the jeep left with a small headache, a soon to be insurance claim, and minimal damage to her patriot. (broken taillight, scratched bumper) I left with a citation, tears in my eyes, and the front end of my runner destroyed. Hopefully tomorrow we will get it towed to a body shop. Then we need insurance company to look at it and determine if its totaled or not. Im really hoping its not and can be repaired. But from what the cop and lady said, i shouldnt get my hopes up. I will try to post pictures tomorrow.

did the airbags go off?
 
We've probably all been there, maybe it didn't result in an accident, but probably a close call. Hopefully the 4runner is fixable, and if not buy it back from insure and part it out, at least you can make a little money back on the situation.
 
Glad to hear everyones ok. How much insurace did you have?

The more threads i read on accidents the more i wonder about the airbags on our runners. I have seen numerous people have accidents where the airbags should have deployed but didnt, and a few threads where airbags deployed while wheeling hard or pulling stumps...

I personally flipped my first runner through a ditch at about 40 and didnt have an airbags deploy.
 
I think we can only go so far here... it's a patriot (a small unibody FWD crossover useless pile of a crap) versus a body on frame 4Runner.

I think if anything, OP is just shaken up. OP, can we get pics? The only serious damage I can see is some possible core support damage, but you say the jeep only suffered a scratched bumper and broken tail light? Not even airbag deployment? I'm doubtful...

Look at the back of this vehicle and tell me that it's strong... I've had aluminum soda cans with more strength than a Chrysler made vehicle (I'm not comfortable referring to them as vehicles).

I've seen a Tacoma get quite a bit of damage when it rear ended the g/f's accord. The Toyota truck impact beam is LOW ... if he nose dived (hard braking) it could have allowed the impact beam to slide right under her bumper. (I don't think he was lifted or even 4x4 IIRC). In this case all you have to stop the impact is the radiator support, and sheet metal.

I did the same thing in customers Civic years ago. Another car turned in front of me, and I t-boned the very back of her accord wagon. The lowered Civic slid right under. Impact beam and air bag sensor were fine (no bags deployed), however the radiator support and sheet metal were destroyed since it was the engine that actually stopped the impact and bounced me off in a 180deg spin.
