Writeup on tranny cooler install

I'm gonna tackle installing my ext tranny cooler & bypassing the stock in radiator setup later this week. I have searched & read numerous posts here & yotatech but I haven't found an actual writeup. Does one exist and if so could someone provide a link please :)

I do regular maintenance stuff but I am a little intimidated by this. If anyone wants to help a brother out I could provide free beer & pizza :cheers:

I'm a little bit too far away to help but I think what you are going to do is a super idea! This way you can never get coolant in your trans, which seems to happen way too often. The sooner the better!:cheers:
 
It's not magic, Just mount the new cooler, and extend the lines as needed. Start it up and in gear the check level, add as necessary.
 
Yea its very strait forward mount it, and run the line and make suer you have enough fluid in there. I put mine is 2 days ago actually. its out of a 1ton dodge.

it came out really clean, im very happy.
 
Installed mine this weekend with a Magnefine inline filter.

the only question that I can't seem to find an answer to is which line to which side of the cooler. I'm mounting mine with the ports facing down and by-passing the stock cooler, does it matter which side the in and out hoses go?

If you mount with the ports facing down it won't make a difference. If you mount it sideways then it only makes sense to put the inlet (coming from the transmission/hot) going into the top port. If you put the inlet going into the bottom port the heat will follow the fluid all the way up and out of the cooler.

I mounted mine with the inlet going into the top port. I measured my trans temp (from the outside with an infrared therm) and it's at least 10 deg cooler.
 
If you don't mind me asking, why would somebody install this? Hauling heavy stuff?

To get rid of the lines running into the radiator and use it as a cooler as it has the tendancy over years to crack and mix with coolant thus resulting in transmission failure.

I say either use a stock 1st gen Tundra cooler or a B&M cooler. If you can find a TRD cooler all the more power to ya.

Looks great, nice install! Really like the idea of a inline filter. Did you bypass the stock setup? I think that's the last question I have. From the pics it looks like to bypass (close off the stocker) you just run a piece of 3/8" ATF hose from the stock send line to the return line. Is that correct?

Yes I bypassed the radiator. You can see in this pic I just used a pigtail hose piece with a bolt in it to seal it up. Although I did notice that after the radiator got hot it must have expanded the air in the old tranny cooler and built up some pressure because it was forcing some leftover trans fluid to drip out past the bolt on one side.

I got the B&M 70268

I would suggest also getting around 8 feet or so of 3/8 trans hose. The hose that comes with the kit seemed to be a smaller size. The steel lines on our trucks are 3/8 so it makes it much easier to push the hose on especially at the crossmember where the steel lines to and from the tranny end. I also needed extra clamps, washers and some bolts/nuts.

I already put the skid plate back on before I thought about taking any pic's. Both lines go to the metal lines off the trans. My ports face down so it didn't matter which line went to which side of the cooler. For the lines I used the tubing Hayden sells, it's 11/32" slightly smaller than the 3/8" but much more sturdy than the stock tubing.

Looks great hairtumor. One less T4R that can suffer the pink milkshake!

So are you planning to add a gauge later? I was going to add a ATF gauge for my Tru-Cool 4454, but I don't know where I would mount one without doing any major drilling.
