I'm beyond being fed up with the local dealers and hope that true 4runner lovers have at least kept up with basic maintenance on their vehicle...

I would like to stay about 5-5.5K but in reality I can go up a little bit from that if it has lower miles, or is a later model 3-gen. Mods not really important to me and not willing to pay a lot extra for them. I prefer white, cream or silver, willing to look at any color except black, too hot. I would prefer to stay well under 200K miles but if someone has all the records, and all service is up to date... I will consider it, but, rust is a deal-breaker.

I would prefer you to be a less than 1000 mile drive of NC and near a major airport.

Dude, no offense. But with that budget and the distance you're willing to travel, you don't need any help. You just need to search. There are plenty of 3rd Gens out there that will fit your bill.

and my issues are, I know nothing about cars, so am having to pay mechanics to tell me that the seller has grossly mis-represented the car, which he probably would not have either tried or at least gotten away with if I knew more about cars. Plus I am on a tight schedule, I leave the USA in less than 3 weeks.

Yesterday I had 2 dealers lie to me about the condition of the car, which I paid 2 mechanics to tell me. One of the mechanics seemed perturbed on my behalf and wrote something along the lines of "seller obviously trying to hide known issues" on the form he gave me. When I got back I handed the form to the dealer and he just shrugged and said "so is there another car here you want to look at"? Other dealer was absolutely certain timing belt had been changed and had paperwork. Got there, no paperwork no sticker. Paid another mechanic to tell me some bolts that would need to be removed to change it had obviously never been removed. This one had 186k mile on it. Air filter was beyond filthy. Mechanic says if they let this go for so long what else did they neglect? When I told him what the mechanic said he responded by saying "yes, but otherwise it is in pretty good shape, huh"? Third I drove 4 hours R/T to see in the afternoon and then car had already been sold. I asked the guy why didn't he tell me when I called to ask about it? He said he was sure I would like one of the other SUV's they had on the lot.

But hey, today is another day, and I have more mechanics to feed......

Honestly I just figured an enthusiast would at least do basic maintenance on his car. Plus, I could go always go back and read his past posts to see what he has complained about....

Ha, dudette, my apologies.

Sorry, I had a few drinks in me last night when I read your original post. That sucks that you've been dealing with mis-represented vehicles. Unfortunately the same thing does happen sometimes with private sales too. But at least those you can generally tell by the documentation. (either they have it or they don't, no need to pay a mechanic.) It's a shame you weren't in the market a few months ago, I sold a '00 SR% that was right up your alley. I'm on the hunt for another one right now myself, but I like the ones that need work. If I come across anything that looks good for you I'll send it your way.

I will likely be putting mine up for sale this weekend. Its an 01 Sport 4x4 with 83,XXX miles. It is super clean with a small lift (1" front space/906 rear coils/trekmaster shocks) and brand new 265/75-16 GY duratrac tires, shrockworks sliders, gray interior, etc. I am in Dallas. Not sure if the price is in your budget, but it is going to be $8500 firm. I plan to wash it and take pics on Saturday to post a for sale add here.
