So at work I'm pulling a 98 limited engine out and I'm so confused why would they not put a gang plug and make it so you can just unplug it and pull the engine. Did they change it In 99?

Just unplug the 4 ecm connectors from the ecm behind the glove box, unbolt the grommet that runs through the firewall, then pull everything through and lay it on the engine.

The 22RE is the same way. Unplug the computer in the passenger kick panel and pull the cable through the firewall.

But those wires also go al the way back to the transmition and tcase

Having worked an numerous makes and manufacturer's vehicles, none of them I've worked on have a gang plug for the entire wiring system.

Heavy equipment manufacturers do this, but not the automakers.

There are only four or five plugs at the transmission/transfer case. Maybe even just three.

Took more time to create this thread than it would to unplug them.

If it's a problem to unplug everything, have someone else do it.


I can have the intake off, and the wiring harness OUT in less than 45 min.

It's not that difficult to pull the plugs from the tranny.

However, if you're feeling extra lazy, just undo the ECU harness along with everything underneath the intake manifold and put it on the side with the tranny harness still attached. Then drop the new motor and hook everything up. IMO replacing the 5VZ is one of the easiest engine swaps that I've done thus far.
It was just a bit*h un-doing the top few tranny bolts, but it makes it a lot easier when you unbolt the tranny crossmember.

Actually with a limited with the t case there are about 10 plugs and 5 wire holders and ford chevy and Subaru and Nissan all have gang plugs.

Late models?

Gotta remember that the newest 3rd gen 4runner is 12+ years old.

Subaru: 1989 ish, Ej, Eg series engines. Up to about 2007 or so. When I had my Sti, I could have the engine in the air in a half hour.

when i pulled my 1999 4runner engine, i just pulled the connectors off the ecu like stated above. manual trans so no wires other than the O2 sensors. you can also disconnect the a/c compressor and put it to the side without evacuating the freon.
