X-REA$ shock replacement

I had a 2016 SR5 as a rental for over a month while on business travel. If you like driving fast (i.e. heavy throttle, hard braking, and cornering relatively fast) the XREAS system makes the 4runner much better.

The SR5 had a lot of nose dive, and body lean while cornering.

Yes, a 4runner is not a sports car, but I thought the SR5 was very soft for pavement driving when compared to my XREAS in my 2015 limited.

If you don't want to do an agressive lift, I would go with the 6112 Bilstein or order the spring/shocks from a Toyota Dealership for the TRD PRO version. That way you are getting OEM quality. I've seen a bunch of threads/posts here that complain about fancy shocks from Fox and such corroding heavily in environments that sees winters and salty roads. I would guess that Fox and Icon do not do the ASTM B117 salt spray testing.

OP Here - I finally swapped the leaking X-REAS for Bilstein 5100s. I really like the new setup. I didn't realize how bad my X-REAS had gotten until I put the new ones on. Thank you all for the good advice!

I'm planning on ditching the X-REAS on my 2014. Do you still have the 20 inch rims and if so, how would you compare the ride going from the stock shocks to the Bilstein? Keeping in mind that your stock setup was already on it's way out of course.

I ditched the 20" rims when I got new tires at 57K. I put FJ Cruiser rims on it and I like them much better. The swap allowed me to put Michelin ATX tires on it. My X-REAS was so bad for so long that I can't give you a good comparison. I will say that I am happy with the ride on the Bilsteins and I don't notice any corner rolling.
