I have 70K on my 2012 4R Limited. Took it to the local Toyota dealer for an oil change today and during the routine inspection, they found that both front seals on the X-REAS suspension were leaking fluid. They will be replacing both the front and rear X-REAS for $3800 - apparently they have to replace the entire system when there is a failure. Fortunately this is covered by my Ext Wty.

Has anyone had a similar issue with X-REAS? Just wondering if this is something to be concerned about going forward. I do almost 100% highway/road driving.

Mine have been replaced twice under warranty. I could sell you my XREAS shocks for a lot cheaper than that :)
 
My X-REAS failed on my 03 Limited at 138,000 km (or 85,750 miles). There was a leak in the system - in the line behind the Driver’s Side Centre Control Absorber. Leak was likely caused by corrosion of the line due to road salt used up here during our Canadian winters.

Fluid that had dripped onto the driveway was the first indicator of some sort of problem. As more fluid leaked out of the system, the suspension became worse.

I removed the entire X-REAS system (too costly to replace - but the lines are still there), and installed the standard 4Runner SR5 OEM suspension (to keep it relatively stock). This was the most cost effective repair for me.

In hindsight, I might have sourced a quality aftermarket shock that was less expensive than the OEM Toyota shocks - but I did not have the luxury of having time to "shock shop" due to the nature of the X-REAS system failure.

Once you are out of the warranty period, you may want to consider cheaper shock alternatives if your X-REAS fails again.
 
You could do a very respectable lift with UCAs and include install and alignment well before you 3800. Hell, add new Wheels or tires and still be under that.

Wow, that is awesome. brand new shocks at 70k.

i have no idea why they fail so much here. My the lift? ours are at ~105k 12 years no leaks. they are rusted to hell. but no leaks and seems to be suspending just fine. more so than my 3rd gen with new shocks. Maybe if i'm ever in a 4th gen with new shocks i'd notice the difference.

oh and no you do not need to replace the whole system. some how xreas shocks for 5th gens are actually not too expensive. nearly 1/4th the cost of 4th gen xreas shocks.

I wonder if they are the same parts, just different part numbers. because the non xreas 4th gen shocks are the same as 5th gen.

i have the ext warranty on mine too and when it comes to that point would we be better off having them swap in the Pro suspension under warranty instead? i like how the xreas performs on road, but 3800 is a lot of coin.
 
I had left front X-REAS shock leaking on my 2004 Sports. I ordered new one from dealer and installed it myself for total of $250 and two hours of work. Unless your check valves failed you don't need whole new system. When you disconnect bad shock check valve keeps fluid from escaping. Word of caution you can do this if your leak is small or just started and you haven't lost whole lot of fluid. I caught my early enough. No problems with system since the repair for six years now.

This is a concern, not because I don't want to upgrade the suspension, but because I want to do it on my time schedule, not the car's! I also appreciate all of this information...

Good point but I didn't ask about this. Since I don't do any off roading, I was fine with them replacing the OEM shocks. (I don't have any after market mods). I have the Toyota Fin Ser Platinum VSA so not sure if they would authorize non-OEM equipment, if that's what you're referring to.

The wty is good until 100K miles or Apr 2019. It cost $840 but with this work and the drivers door lock actuator replaced a few months ago, the ext wty has been well worth the investment.

Both front shocks were leaking and since they are cross-connected with the rear shocks, the entire system is being replaced. Since I'm not paying for it, I'm fine with the entire system being new at 70K.
 
I recently just installed my icon stage 2 tub system due to having three leaking x-reas shocks. I highly recommend going with a quality aftermarket set up if anybody is having to go out of pocket for repair.

If anyone is reading this and needs to replace their xreas shocks, I, like DannyLlama, have the front and rear xreas shocks for sale. The front still have the coil springs mounted and as a full strut assembly. Shocks were professionally removed according to Toyota instructions.

$4 G's? Holy hell. I knew it was expensive but... if mine fail and I get that kind of quote I'm going with a different option. I only have 68,000km on my 4Runner but it seems like once these get above 120,000km/70,000mi it's a big question mark.

I just picked it up and the total was $2600, paid by ext wty. The original quote was a little high, obviously...

Yes, you're correct but I ended up getting my money's worth (and then some) from the ext wty.
 
no issue

I just traded my 05 with 150K miles. never a issue with the X-reas. My 2014 has them also. Don't Worry, its a Toyota
