XM Roady2

I just got a Delphi Roady2 for XMas and I'm trying to get creative with the install in my 2k4 4Runner SR5. I have the basic Toyota HU, no changer or steering wheel controls.

I am thinking of placing it into the fold out deck on the center console...well running the wires into there and then making a small harness to hold the unit down while in use but allow it to be removed.

I am curious if its possible to hard wire the unit to the HU rather then use the tape deck. Anyone have suggestions?

Why would youu want to hard wire it, don't have one yet but was under the impression the unit will transmit into a pre selected FM station.
 
Hard wiring (or direct connect) give much better sound quality (similar to CD quality) over the FM modulator. FM-mods are sufficient but somewhat lacking.

I am not sure if these are available for the stock HU (no JBL, etc) but PIE and BlitzSafe and a couple of other companies make harnesses that allow you to use the current radio's CD changer output as input for an IPOD or SAT Radio (mini-jack connector). I'm using the PIE with my Sirius receiver. Logjam Electronics sells both of these units.

Another option would be to get an aftermarket HU that has an auxillary input or swap out for a SCION unit. I hear the stock 4Runner radio isn't too hot so that might be an option.

my research showed that you could only hared wire the XM comander by Terk. By using a blitzsafe type harness. the Stock OEM unit does not have preouts, I just upgraded my HU to an alpine XM unit much better sound than the stock unit.

You also look like you go to PSU... main campus?

I'm an installer at the bestbuy in state college...

You can hardwire the roady 2 into the 4runner.

Here are the things you need
A) A cigarette socket splitter, that converts one cigarette adapter into two... that has some wire.... going from the plug into the two cigarette sockets.. (10 bucks)
b) FM modulator that plugs into the back of the radio
(30-50 bucks)

Best buy has them I know that... walmart might have them..
The Roady 2 requires 6 volts to run. The cigarette plug is a transformer. So to hardwire it to your radio, you can use one of the socket ends with the wire and tap it behind your radio to your accessory and ground.

Then you take the FM Modulator, it should have an red wire and a black wire. YOu take the red wire..... wire it to a switch, which is accessible for you and then wire it to your accessory like the socket and black to the ground.

The switch will allow you to have clear FM Radio when you don't want to listen to satellite radio, once you flip it on, the only channel you will pick up well is the Satellite radio.


MAKE SURE YOU GET THE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES RIGHT ON THE CIGARETTE SOCKET!!! IF YOU DON"T, the Fuse inside the Roady 2 cigarette adapter will blow and you'd have to find another one of those, and only radio shack carries them.


So you can have a hardwired Roady 2 while everyone else wonders why they can't hardwire their's......

what about hardwiring the Roady2 to the XM Ready Scion HU? Also, since the Scion HU is XM ready, is Roady2 the best option to get XM? Or should I be getting something else?

Xm ready means that you HU will work with XM if you get a turner box the tuner box for this looks more like an amp and displays the XM controls on your HU. The roady is made for a non Xm ready HU. Adding a roady to the scion will work but you will be controling the Xm from the Roady and not the scion. Adding the tuner box will allow you not to have clutter on the dash unlike mounting the roady. I would contact pioneer or scion for the answer to this one. I would think that since the scion unit is made by pioneer it would work. But I dont know if it will or not
