World class V8, same V8 and 5speed transmission they put in the $65K Lexus LX470 and the new Landcruiser. Same engine and 5 speed transmission that comes standard in the GX470. Why don't they offer the 4.0 V6 in the Lexus GX470? Now let me ask you why you would not get the 4.7 V8 with the 5 speed transmission in the 4runner?

X-Reas is sweet, I've shocked some fellow riders how fast you can push this thing in turns, I've had them grabbing the oh shit handles 
: my 1 friend thought I was gonna roll it cause of the speed I was cornering at, I've even lost some of my friends with the amazing abilities this thing offers

the V8 requires the owners to do pesky oil changes, the V6 has lifetime oil

Im looking for the 7500 and I think I found it on toyota.com in the frequently asked questions section, surprised that in your truck they did not give your the maintenance booklet, 5000 is driving style 1 and 7500 is type 2, I stay within warranty guidelines to, could always call the 800 number

I'd say if you don't plan the tow then the v6 might be better just save ya a few bucks in the back pocket.
Both engines are great and work wonderfully w/ the 4runner. You really can't go wrong with either setup.
The only big diff aside from the tranny is that the v6 is part time 4wd (if you get 4wd) and the v8 is full time 4wd (if you get 4wd). So that does make abit of difference.
Regardless this topic has been talked about alot on this forum so you can search and read up on the wealth of replies there

Towing is the reason I chose V8. I'm towing 5000 lbs of camp trailer with my 4Runner, and it performs great.
But I also like the extra torque of the V8 in normal driving too. It gives you that extra "jump" off the line. Plus, I love the way it sounds over the V6. Plus, I like the way it can cruise at 80 MPH and purr like a kitten (a very large kitten) and not feel like its working hard at all. Maintenance will be no more costly than the V6, except maybe the fact that it carries more oil. The down side, of course, is lower gas mileage. But what's 2 less MPG cost you per month? Probably less than you think. Figure it out based on your typical monthly mileage, then decide if the extra cost is worth it to you.

EDGE, I have the maintenance booklet and the only option is 5K mile service. This is strange. Also check out this Toyota website and put in 2004 4runner, it comes back with only 5K mile option. www.toyotapartsandservice.com/smg/main.php
EDGE, I just checked the above Toyota maintance site and it shows that Toyota changed the requirements from 2003 to 2004. They eliminated the 7500 mile option. In 2004 you only have the 5K mile option for keeping your warranty in effect.
I guess I will stay with the Castrol GTX 5w30 at 4K mile changes, because 5K mile using Mobil 1 would just be a waste of money. Thanks for your posts. I don't understand why Toyota made these changes???

I wonder why your mechanic would recommend the V6 over the V8? My previous post that you referenced is all of the reasons I needed to buy the V8. I did not even consider the V6 and I don't tow and won't tow. I agree with good times do the research and pick the one that works best for you. I realize everyone does not think like me, which is a very good thing. You can't go wrong with either engine, I just like to get the most bang for my buck. If you are going to keep the 4runner until it dies the V8 will out live a V6 just because it doesn't have to work as hard. When you drive a car you feel the Torque not the HP. The Torque is what hits you in the back. Think muscle cars when you think torque. The V8 has more Torque at lower RPM's where you use them. Good luck
