One thing these articles seem to ignore is the fact that fog lamp is somewhat of a misnomer. A more appropriate term is inclement weather lamp. The situation in which yellow fogs really pull through is very wet road. Still, it has less to do with scattering and "penetrating" fog, and more to do with the fact that the light reflected back at you is a shorter wavelength, which compromises your nightvision to a lesser degree. As was pointed out in one of the articles, red is out of the question. It's the same reason all our interior lighting is amber. Why the idiots at honda keep making those pure white clusters is beyond me.
And if the light filter losses argument is holding anyone back, consider that 2500-3000k HIDs have no filter element, just different salts in the capsule. Also, higher-wattage bulbs counteract this, like the 100W narva yellowstars in my PIAA 540s (still waiting to be installed, unfortunately). I wouldn't recommend, however, tossing high-wattage dichroic bulb onto a factory wire harness.
