Yes...Another Satoshi Grill Mod

I have been looking at 4R's with satoshi mod and wanted to do it.

So here is my attempt. I know I can do better with finishes, but I think for the most part it came out fine.

I got my Diamond Mesh Grill from ebay 12"x48" for $29

I started with taking off the grill



Center dremmelled out



Traced the grill opening by placing it over the mesh..a little wiggling is required account for the curve in the grill



Then cut the grill with tin snip and bend. I used 2x4 for bending



Dry fitting...I am trying remove plasti-dip starting from right side..it was pain-in-the-tush. I had to use sander with 150 grade sheet



All cleaned up and primered



Another dry fit, needs some stretching and bending and TOYOTA logo



All finished up

Has anyone done one of these grill mods with a hilux surf badge instead of the toyota?

I was thinking about one of these hilux badges if I can get my hands on one. What do yall think?

Thanks! I've read through all those threads and concluded that unless u're a skilled perfectionist, it'll never sit as well as an 05+ grill. Ofcourse I could just get an 05 grill and modify the hood latch mech, but then I'd want 05+ headlights to match the gap. Then if i did that, I'd need to convert the headlight connections. LOL!

Maybe in the future. Just maybe... As of now, I'm happy that I do not have a chrome grill.

I have not seen it, but, heck, once grill is on...you can put in anything and change whenever you feel like. I like 5th Gen 4Runner logo as some of the folks did with Satoshi, I might do that some time down the road.

They'll cut you the 4Runner piece from any mesh they carry and can probably accommodate the matt request too. Speaking of, the guy's name is Matt and you can reach him at [email protected].

I can't recommend them highly enough. Matt patiently answered a number of my questions before I spent a penny on his site. Shoot him an email, let him know what you have in mind and see what he says.

if i can pick any mesh for custom..thats kool...i'll go for larger hex mesh...i know my finish is not that great.. for it being 1st attempt

It would be nice if someone did, for sure. It would be a piece of cake (relatively speaking) if the plastic inner grid was removable without cutting. The only way it would make sense to make and sell these would be to do the flush style (like the OP did). I did the "deep" version and there's little chance IMO of anyone doing the filling, sanding, and painting efficiently enough to make one for a reasonable cost. (For more on deep vs. flush, see my thread.)

Check out @Mytoy4's thread. What she did was genius IMO. She used the grill opening as a template to cut a wood form for shaping the mesh before installation.

Makes great sense and if someone had one of those to use with every grill they made, it just might be worth their while to make and sell them. I asked Terri and unfortunately, she discarded the form after doing her grill.

I wish these guys would just make the entire grill and not just pre-cut the mesh.
