Yet another tire size thread

I know this has been covered to death, and I’ve done my best to read all I could find on this forum and others. But I didn’t find much about 295/70/r16 tires.

So here it goes.

Background info:

- Previous owner put 265/75/r16 highway tires on this stock height 2000 SR5 with limited-style big fender flares.

- Soon I’ll have Bilstein 5100s and OME 880/906 (1.5”-2” lift) and Spidertrax 1.25” spacers.

- I know that I’ll be able to fit a 265/75/r16 tire in the stock spare location based on what I’ve read.

Questions:

- Has anyone run 295/70/r16 all terrain tires? (Maybe BFG KO2s?)

- Would that size fit in the stock spare location? (I’d like to run a 5-tire rotation.)

- Should I just stick with my current 265/75/r16 size?

EDIT: after even more searching I’m not seeing much info on 295/70/r16s at all. Is this even a standard tire size?

I could swear I saw it listed on another 3rd gen build before...

FWIW I'm running 265/75/16 KO2s on a 1.75" OME lift and everything fits great, looks great, and that particular tire diameter makes the speedometer 100% accurate at all speeds when I compare it to GPS. I also have a 5'th full size spare mounted on another star wheel and it fits in the stock location.... but barely. I know the 295/70/16 is only 1.9% bigger in diameter but that might just be enough to not fit well. Personally I'd stick with the 265/75/16 and eschew the spacers.

285s just barely fit in the stock spare location (not even properly so), so I very highly doubt 295s will
I've seen a few other people here use 295s before but few and far in between, it's definitely an uncommon size. I think user [MENTION=595680]Wrenchin4torts[/MENTION] is using some

I'm running 295/70-17's which is a inch larger.
BUT I also have worked in the tire industry the last 14 years. So I can help. 295/70-16 is a very rare size it's actually smaller in diameter than the 285/75-16 but wider. It's really only .5" taller over the 265 which you only gain 1/4" ground clearance. Not worth the heavier set up.

Id be shocked if it fit underneath especially with the hitch. I run a swing down hitch mounted spare carrier on mine.

I personally would run the 265/75-16 because you have a lot more options being a more common size and prices are lower, also you won't need spacers furthering your savings. If you want a wider stance save for wheels
If you want bigger tires I'd run 285-75-16 more options /lower prices actual ground clearance gains. But you need to relocate your spare.


Lastly don't buy ko2s way overpriced for poor performance.

Here to is a Geo MT 295/70 R17. Wheels are 17x8.5 with a 0 offset.

3" Toytec ultimate coils with SPC UCA's set to E / -1.0 Caster up front

90% of the time I'm on road. But they're often bad roads, with bad weather half the time. I mean city pavement with potholes, branches, flooding, snow, ice, rain, slush, etc. Some highway use as well.

10% off-road. Not rock crawling, but rather fire roads, dirt/mud, gravel, small rocky/rooty sections, water crossings (< 1 foot), etc. Basically just getting off the beaten path for camping, exploring, and mountain biking.

Your comments (and others') confirm my going with 265/75/r16 tire size.

- I'm assuming I should go with an All Terrain tire? (rather than a highway/all-season, or mud)

- As far as which specific tire to go with, sounds like you're saying avoid the KO2s and go with Yokohama Geolandars?

- What's you opinion of General Grabber AT/X?

I'm not [MENTION=438947]wrench[/MENTION]ing4torts but just wanted to give my two cents. I am also on the east coast like you with lots of snow, ice, potholes, roots, mud, etc. I have the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws in 265/75r16 on my 4Runner, my family also has them in various sizes on a first gen Tundra and a Land Rover Discovery. Having tried quite a few all terrains on various vehicles I can say hands down these are my favorite tires for the use case you described.

Some folks on here and other forums claim that they wear quickly, I personally have found them to wear exceptionally slowly when rotated properly. Mine are the 116T rating but the other vehicles have different load ratings and have been equally satisfactory.
 
^^^ am also using Falken Widepeaks and very much like them so far. Though I don't get nearly as much snow or ice as your side. Also cheap

Those we’re definitely on my radar but it’s really nice to hear your review of them specifically in regards to my use case and I think after reading some more and hearing you talk about them, they’ve moved to the top of my short list..

You mention some say they are quick to wear, but honestly given the weather we drive in, I’d rather maximize performance even if it means buying more tires over the life of the truck.

Thank you for the compliment on my rig, honestly most of us are just like you we all like to think were offroad warriors but most of our driving is on road. I usually lean towards having amazing function for that 10% where I'm getting crazy and sacrifice the rest of the time
ie mud tires , I don't recommend them for most. I have three toyotas so I don't need a do all tire. But for a daily driver I'd go with the goodyear duratrac best tire only reason I don't run them is they don't have a three ply sidewall like most muds, but if your not extreme wheeling they are the best hands down mud /deep snow and ice traction (you usually can't have both), only down side is some tire hum , if you mind the hum next would be the goodyear ultra terrain same carcass(like a frame or internal build) as the duratrac but quieter. After that the cooper at3 Lt. Avoid the falken at3w , they are super popular on forums , some people have had good luck with them, but my company has replaced many for ride complaints or out of round specifically on toyota 4x4's falken is so aware of it they have a specific procedure for warranty replacements of that model. My two cents

I realized I never commented on the general grabbers , they're a decent tire I'd buy them over ko2s. Depending on price you find they would be a good option. Did you land on tire yet ?
 
Just my .02 but I've hit some pretty gnarly shit in Virginia as well as AOAA and 265/75 has served me very well. I do air down but I've never been stuck and I do all the same wheeling you do. 295s IMO are overkill and your MPG will probably take a big shit and like you said youll need spacers and all that crap

If your really looking to go taller without much issue id say go for 255/85/16,
33x10 essentially. I'm looking of going that route once my wildpeaks are worn but 265/75 seems to be a sweet spot
