Well I finally sold my Supra so that I could get into a 4Runner! I have always wanted a 4R but, never seemed to have the opportunity. When I started looking for one about 10 years ago a family friend offered a 90 Wrangler for $500…running with safety inspection, emissions and all?? I couldn’t pass it up but, I have always wished it was an FJ40 or 4R for some reason. I guess because I have always had MR2s and Supras, 90s Toyotas that just would NEVER break down and that damn Jeep seemed to break every time I took it out! …Of course, it doesn’t help when I role it, drive it of cliffs, catch it on fire (twice), shoot bullet holes in it, get it windshield deep in water, or caked in mud!

So, enter the 4Runner! My official Jeep rescue vehicle and much more.

Custom Wire Harness (we'll say for accessories)
Air On Board Switches
Rear View Camera Mod (thanks to T4R community for inspiration here)

x4 Bulldog LED Light Pods (for left and right side lighting)
Custom Roof Rack
Compressor
Custom Front Bumper Build

The Wiring Harness Madness Begins...It will likely never end:vader:

The harness will power:
- 40" Bulldog LED light bar
- 2 LED Light pods facing right
- 2 LED Light pods facing left
- 2 LED Light pods facing rear
- Rear mounted air compressor
- A winch circuit (although I am not sure I will need it??)
- Rear view camera mod
- 3 24/7 12V outlets
- Auxiliary fuel tank transfer pump (when I get around to installing that)

I have been collecting bits and pieces to fab up a wiring harness for all the extras. Also drafted a wire schematic to help out for when it comes time to get it all together.


And the build starts!!! ….ugh, with a visit to the junk yard. I never thought that I would be here shopping for my 2014!?!?:behindsofa:


Found it!! 98-Something Toyota Camry. The Toyota Echo has one also but harness opening is much smaller


Now to find a place to drill a hole. The inner fender was a thought but there is a doubler panel here so I decided to drill behind the park brake cable.

Started to lay out the wires












Now it’s time to verify the reverse signal at the Nav. Thanks to Deekoi, sp8ball, Antman and others for pioneering this one!

Park, no signal.

I got yelled at by LXRunner with caps and this guy :confused: when I planned on using a relay here:doh:. I will buy you a beer if I ever meet you as the diode was the way to go. For me, it will help serve 2 functions that the relay could not. I will be activating the rear camera with a switch that will also activate my rear lights. The 2 functions will be as follows:

1 – Air On Board Rear Light switch will activate rear spot and fog lights and camera will also come on.
2 – Shift to reverse and this signal will also activate my rear fog and spot lights without having to use switch.

The diode is shown in reverse direction here…opps.:doh:




I tucked the additional wire back into the factory harness so that it comes out further down.




It will connect to the additional harness here.




Now time to tackle the dimmer circuit.


The problem with tying into the grey wire here is that the switches will aluminate with the instrument cluster. That is to say that the switches will be lit even with the lights turned off. They still dim just are on all the time. I will likely change this.

So yesterday I bench tested the harness and then did a hot check. Hooked it up to power and ran it through its paces Everything looks good for now!


Dimmer circuit works great!


And so I started to slip into place.







Connected in the rear camera cicuit.

Did I miss where you stated what this harness is for? I see lights on your bench, but this seems too involved for just lights...

I really want to! I took off the factory side steps the minute I got home last year. I really should have done that before the trip. I felt like I had to watch out for everything.

If I come this year I will hit up some of the more interesting stuff with you for sure.
 
I have been having to drive the old MR2 being that the 4R's interior is all appart. But, I did get some more work done last night.

The harness is all laid out on the inside and interior is back together. The only things left to complete are the two Bussmann fuse/relay blocks to mount and then pin up. And I need to hit up Automotive Touch Up Paint from PaintScratch - Order Pro Grade Paint to fix some of the damaged paint at the firewall.





I will close up the harness here once I have mounted the Bussmann and determined all the wire lengths.

I love the "factory" look of the Air On Board switches. I went and moved the dimmer to the bottom.

I also tested out the Bulldog lighting with a quick hook-up to the MR2.







And, yes that is the tiny garage space that I have to work with. It is actually pretty big but, I have so much crap in there! I cannot wait to get into a bigger work shop!!
 
Well, I got a new job and have made the move from Houston to Maine! It was a tough call, but after visiting I am just drawn to the mountains....Houston has NONE!

I am hoping to find some kick ass trail riding and camping up in the New England area. Definitely can't wait to explore the Northeast!

Before I left, I installed a trans cooler and took the traditional pic at Buc-ee's

Well. You take care up there! It is some beautiful country. It was good chatting with you for that, oh, 20 minutes or so last year. :becky:

Vermont

I haven't been on them, but check out the Class IV roads in Vermont - from what I hear they are great for exploring and getting off the beaten path.

Check out DirtRoadTrip - they have a few writeups of some travels in NE. (no affiliation btw, just a good group of guys)
