You can only have one: rear diff lock vs 5-speed?

You can ONLY have one of the two, and you must live with it like that. NO, you cannot buy an auto with diff lock and convert to 5-speed. You cannot buy a 5-speed and install an ARB rear locker. However, you CAN use your money for every other mod under the sun.

For your uses, whatever they may be... Which is the top priority for you?

I'll start by saying I do have both, but the locker is more helpful. The 5-speed is more fun/challenging to drive and a little more reliable, but does not improve the overall capability of vehicle. A locker makes a huge difference.

5 speed, I've used my locker a handful of times, but I'd love to drive a 5 speed daily. If it was a dedicated wheeler then auto and locker since wheeling in an auto is much easier and the locker is helpful if I'm really wheeling.

When I was looking to buy a new 4Runner nearly 18 years ago, I would only buy one equipped the way I wanted.

The 4Runner I ended up with: '97, SR5, V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker, optional Factory Oak leather, Premium sound, larger optional wheels, tires, and brakes.

Basically it's the same as a Limited of that model year, but with a much more fun to drive 5-speed.

I enjoy the e-locker that I added 9 years after I bought the 96 and am glad to have it, but the 5 speed is where it's at. Auto makes me crabby.

There's nothing wrong with my Auto, it shifts smooth but I love driving a 5 speed. Plus the extra MPG would be nice. Plus with my 01 I have ATRAC so I can electronically simulate a locker if I can't have a real one. Does that violate rules haha?

I've contemplated doing a 5 speed swap on mine, but I doubt I ever will. An automatic can also be nice for sitting in traffic, pulling out on a steep hill with a moron behind you, etc. It does have it's perks.

In this case e-locker. I love the 4Runner auto! I swear it is better auto transmission than some newer cars. Simple, smooth, downshift and upshifts at correct points (ECT on), some newer cars buck you around on downshifts from 2-1.

I don't have a elocker. But wouldn't mind one. I like my auto. It truly is a beast transmission. But I have a 5 speed with all necessary parts waiting to be swapped in. And I can't wait. Plus for $400. Who can beat that !!

I left the street/tuner world for specific personal reasons, but still miss having a 5-speed drift car. I would hate a 5-speed in something as slow as the 4Runner, shifting gets old when you get old.

When my Sister bought her '01 4Runner, we had a little race on a deserted stretch of road.

While I agree that no 4Runner is fast, even when supercharged, etc., the difference between our 4Runners was fairly dramatic.

Both V6 4wd 4Runners, running the exact same tires.

My 5-speed easily outran her automatic, multiple times. Yes, the 5-speed doesn't make it fast, but it does make it a bit more peppy, and less boring to drive.


That's one of the main reasons why I haven't bought a newer 4Runner. They are only available with an automatic, since '01.

It really depends on the driver. When I add a supercharger, CAI & high flow exhaust my 2.7 will beat that.

Why not one of each? I have both--01 auto with e-locker and 96 5speed open for now. I've been driving the 5speed more the last two weeks or so since the conversion was done. For offroad, technical crawling the 5speed has to be geared down via lower t-case gearset or dual cases. The auto can be fine as is in stock form.
