the spindle is cracked! replace asap before further damage occurs or worse, have an accident and get hurt. with the cold weather it will happen quick!

I saw somebody selling custom aftermarket spindles but i can't remember who it was…OE should be fine though :bluejump:

Sun just happened to hit it after I washed the car and was inspecting my handy work... Does anyone think crappy non oem ubj's could have caused this or am I not thinking about this correctly?

I am not seeing a crack on the UBJ, but on the knuckle itself.

As per folks who have ordered from Camelback, Toyota no longer just sells the UBJ but includes it pressed into a new knuckle if I remember correctly. Maybe Toyota has seen more of these cracks to consider taking such action.

The bad thing is that since the knuckle will be replaced, have fun with the bearing removal and installation.

Find a used knuckle...

With a good used knuckle... no worries with bearing or joints... :loco:

Ok, so I didn't install the new/ faulty ubj's. So could someone enlighten me?... When you buy replacement ball joints, do they come pre assembled with the spindle? I'm trying to figure out if I should go after the manufacturer for the warranty... They're only a year old.

Yeezus. Good thing you caught that. I've seen lots if LBJ failure photos. I don't even wanna know what a spindle failure accident looks like.

Both are true, who installed them? Ask him!

As others have said it is the steering knuckle that is cracked. I would suspect the damage started either when the old ball joint was being removed or the new ball joint was being installed. Maybe it started in crooked and was forced the rest of the way. I would go back to the person that installed them.

I can't tell from the picture if it's the spindle that's cracked or the ball joint. No matter where you order a spindle it will most likely come bare. Meaning you will need to press the bearing, seals, etc in it.. If the bearing is fine then use it, otherwise replace. I recommend buying new seals though but watch out as they're rather costly. There's no problem buying used, say off of someone parting out their 4runner. This could save you some money and time as it's purely a swap and go kind of job. If you're handy with a wrench it's not that hard.

I don't think aftermarket balljoints caused the crack. I haven't seen too many instances of this though so it really could be anything. I think it's just a faulty spindle. It could have happened when replacing your ball joints last and you never noticed as working (banging, wrenching, pulling) may have caused some extended stress on it and after a little time, it cracked without you being aware of it. Who knows.

If the spindle is cracked, get a replacement spindle asap. Otherwise you can end up like many before you on the side of the road with your front end in the ground and your tire 50ft. down the road. No fun. As far as aftermarket upper control arms (what the guy above me meant with uniball uppers), I don't think they're needed in this situation.

Good luck

Thanks... Glad I caught it before my pregnant wife started driving my car! 4runner is garaged until I return from a trip... So if I went the parted out/ junk yard route, would I just get the whole upper arm assembly?

That's good..

All you would need is the socket to undo the cv axle (if it's still there), a tool to remove the upper ball joint, and other tools to undo the lbj, brake line clamps, and couple other odds and ends maybe then the whole assembly is free. You don't need the upper control arm unless you don't feel like taking the ubj off at the yard. I've gone to yards and seen spindles just sitting on the ground or in the drivers seat before so you might get lucky. Just make sure you get the right one that corresponds with your truck, 2wd vs 4wd.

You guys rock! Love this forum! Of course the part i need is the most expensive, and most labor intensive to fix! I'll do some junk yard shopping, and see if the shop that installed the ubj will help me out.... I'm not bad with a wrench, but this May be a bit beyond me....
