You know you're a Third Generation 4Runner owner when...

What parts do you carry with you?

spark plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, coil, anything reasonable that i've replaced that was still working. Not as crazy as carrying a radiator or lbj. I also carry a metric socket set, and other basic tools.

When you're watching a movie on date night and you spot a clean 3rd gen and have to rewind and pause it to check it out lol

Does anyone else do this

I do that. I also get a kick out of spotting 3rd gens in different countries on map street views. Here is a recent Russian find.

Don't ask why I'm looking up Russian street addresses...

...when your life flashes before your eyes every time you go over train tracks, speed bumps, or potholes because you haven't replaced your LBJ's yet...

When you notice that not a damn thing rattles on the interior of your 97 Limited after 230~k miles, but your new daily driver has been to the dealership already to take care of a rattle within the first 5 months of ownership. It's just...solid.

Edited to add: the interior doesn't rattle, but the tools, the sven saw, and the hi-lift do a little...but take those out and we're back to zero rattle.

When your not entirely sure if the hood isn't latched or the road is bumpy....

maybe that's just mine, I adjusted the bumpers a bit and it's better but still nerve racking.

...when you finish painting your wheels, including a new (to me) full size spare, and think "seems like a shame to stick that pretty wheel underneath the 4Runner with all that winter salt":

I have to ask...why are you looking up Russian street addresses. Let alone, what appear to be super rural Russian street addresses. The kind of place where cyka blyat might be uttered routinely.

No worries, I'm not cyber-stalking some Russian hillbillies or anything.

I could tell you the real reason — but then I'd have to come smoke a bowl with you.

When you park way out at the end of the parking lot on purpose — just so you get to do the long walk back while checking out your truck and maybe snapping a surreptitious pic or two.

Otherwise you just look like a weirdo standing out in the lot acting suspicious.

When asked the silly question, "what vehicle would you get if you win the lotto?"
You reply: Aside from the luxury/sport vehicles I'd get a few more 4Runners :tongue1:

When your girlfriends dad says your dumb for putting so much time and money into a truck with 200k miles because it isn't worth it, but then you look at it and it's completely worth it. Plus it'll last a lot longer than his Ram pickup.

When you stop at a light next to a glass truck that's carrying a mirror on the side and can't help but stare at how good not having running boards looks.

When you park next to another 3rd gen at school and when you come back he's gone, but another one took his place.

And my favorite, when you have to argue with your girlfriend who has a 1999 Jeep TJ that you should take the 4Runner on the camping trip because it's more practical, and you win.

No one would think you look suspicious in a parking lot. Just doing a little weather experiment...

I actually <Strike>broke into</Strike> wandered into the set of Back To The Future 3 when I was still in high school. Was out in the California foothills with some buddies and followed an old dirt road turnoff from the main road.

Came to a padlocked gate, so we got out and looked around a bit. Had no idea what was on the other side. After a short bit, we finally got back into the car and as we were backing up — I watched the chain with a padlock that was holding the gates locked together, suddenly come undone and unwrap itself from around the gate and drop to the ground. Absolutely creepy as hell and we all looked at each other in wide-eyed horror.

I took that as a sign that we were supposed to proceed. So away we went but we weren't going to get out and push the gates open cause it was getting dark and spooky as hell out there — so we pushed the gates open with my car and wandered along the old dirt road/trail until we came to this fake old west town. We quickly realized it was just a movie set, though at the time we didn't know what movie.

Anyways, just as we stopped to get out and look around, the sound of a dirt bike started up in the distance and proceed to grow louder as it quickly traveled towards us.

Not sure why, but the sound of that roaring two-stroke "ring-a-ding-ding" engine sent a dreadful chill down my back and I took this as a "sign" it was time to leave — quickly.

As we were making our way back towards the main road, I spotted a cloud of dust 100 yards behind me and thanks to the primitive "fight or flight" response, I suddenly got a massive adrenaline dump that only a teenage heart could have absorbed without damage. On this day I chose "flight" and immediately proceeded to go into full-on "Dukes of Hazzard" mode. Instantly I turned my 1984 Buick Le Saber into a rally car with four freaked-out teenagers in it. We were sideways and drifting through corners like it was the Fast and Furious set instead of Back to the Future.

We hit the main road at high speed and mostly sideways along with a massive cloud of dust and screeching tires. I even lost two hubcaps when I made that turn onto the main road.

I don't think we slowed down until we put at least another 5 miles between us and what we all believed was some insane dirt-bike killer chasing us because we stumbled upon his hidden killing grounds. In hindsight however, I suspect it was just a security guard...

We probably chained smoked a pack or two of Marlboros on the way home just trying to settle our nerves.

Many years later after the movie set burnt down, (and no that wasn't any of us) I made it back there as an adult. I learned it was BLM land (or something similar) and I would often spend all day alone out there smoking pot, writing poetry & meditating/reading whatever — well, I mean I did that stuff when I wasn't shooting rattle snakes and stuff. Also spent time shooting photos when I finally ran out of bullets.

Eventually other people started going out there and dumping their trash, starting fires etc... Finally the sheriffs dept. started going out and telling people it was private land (it wasn't) and to GTFO. Last time I went out there, it was all locked up.

I would love to take my Runner in there for a day of fun with my wife and kids but I doubt that will ever happen now. Miss that place...

Some old pics I took back in the day with a 3 or 4 megapixel camera. Advanced technology at the time!

Creeper back in the day...

When you see Doc from Back to the Future and automatically think of StreetCreeper

Well I do get around...
