My lower ball joint failed (check the sheared peice in the first pic)... they're 16x8s.

Wow I didn't realize just how important those ball joints are until now. Was that the original ball joint from the factory and how much miles does your 4Runner have, if you don't mind me asking?

I replaced the upper ball joints but after seeing this picture I will be purchasing and installing new lower ones this week. My truck is a 2001 with 167,000 miles. Good luck with the repairs.

Whoa... did the ball joint give you any warning it was going to fail? Had you been feeling anything different in the front end?

I've only had the vehicle for a few months and didn't notice anything different. No clacking, no grease around the boot... just failure (and my tears).

Yes... very strange eh? My axle looks like it's toast too. I was looking for an excuse to change my front diff oil, but this was a bit extreme!

Wow, I think that is the exception. I've been on random forums for a while and havent seen that yet. Scary indeed...

You going through insurance to replace the body parts? It may go under comp since its basically something that collided with your vehicle vs the other way around. (I used to be an adjuster)

Mine has 164k so I am a little concerned, especially since I do all freeway driving and a failure like that at 65mph wouldnt be fun :wow2:

How much do the parts run to do the ball joints? How hard of a job is it? any special tools?

Cuz I think I have changed my priorities around a bit.

Only get OEM ball joints guys. I bought Moog LBJs ~4 months ago and they're already leaking grease and looked like chapped lips. Absolutely ridiculous quality. Their warranty is designed to screw you too, no money back just another bad quality Moog part, after I pay for shipping and have my truck down for about 2 weeks, only to replace it with another sub-par Moog part. Plus, I have to do an alignment again and they aren't going to pay for that either. This is all I can do to fight back against a greasy corporate THIEF!! My OEMs lasted 13 years and looked better than the Moogs after only 4 months! STAY AWAY FROM MOOG - or anything not OEM!!!
