YZZD1 Toyota oil filter...same as YZZD3 ?

Changing my oil last week I noticed today that my oil filter is stamped YZZD1 instead of the usual YZZD3. After bitching to the guy who gave it to me at the parts department, he assured me that they both work fine. It's been bugging me all weekend and I figure I should ask some of the more seasoned members of the forum.

Should I take it out and replace it or just leave it on until the next 5000 miles ? I don't think I had an issue putting it on and according to the high school kid working behind the counter he said that this one is a little shorter but holds more oil. If I do take it out how much more motor oil do I need to add to compensate ? I've already driven probably 200 miles on the YZZD1 filter. Is it worth it to take it out and replace it with the YZZD3 ?

They are the same in terms of thread and diameter size. The D3 is taller by I believe 3/4". I think member toto posted pictures of the measurements. The D1 is considered a V6 filter and the D3 is a V8 filter. Many use the D3 on the V6 because of more filtering capacities. IMO, if you have it installed, I wouldn't worry about it until the next oil change.

BTW, no wonder why he's in highschool... it's shorter but holds more oil? Kid needs to be schooled some more. I wouldn't worry about the oil, any additional amount between the two filters are insignificant.

When I was getting parts, my buddy at counter asked what engine I had. He initially got me the D1, but I told him I want the V8 filters. The V6 originally comes with a V8 filter from Japan, the 90915-20004.

on my dad's 99 4runner it uses the D1, which is a 3.4L v6, on my 2004 4runner v6, it uses the D3.

So apparently I can use the D1 on both since u say the D3 is for V8 ?

Was just told by the Toyota dealer that the 90915-YZZD1 oil filter changes part number to 90915-YZZG2. Hope this helps. (Note: This was for a 2005 Highlander)

D3 is what manual calls for. I would go back and tell them they sold wrong part. Parts dept is obligated after confirming this to provide you with correct number at no charge. GL

The D1 filter fits earlier 4Runner V6 models and the 4Cyl 2TRFE motor so the parts guy could've made a mistake. D1 and D3 will fit and work. The D3 is larger which has more filter element surface area and holds a little more oil. D3s were designed for engines with larger oil capacities. I'd recommend whatever the manufacture calls for.

So many oil filters are interchangeable.
The filter for my 2000 Trooper fits my 2010 Sonata and is larger.
So again, bigger is better, and less filters to buy.
