junkyard rear bump stops, and now fronts too!

I searched around and haven't been able to find if this has already been documented.

A great junkyard, DIY rear bumpstop to replace the stockers can be found under the rear of the s10 blazers and oldsmobile bravada's.

I have used these on several rigs, tuning the mounting and length to suit my suspension but i have always been happy with them.

For the 4runner i simply removed the rock hard stock rears and bolted these in place with the appropriate metric hardware. The bump stop itself simply pop's into the buckets, and seems to be very sturdy. On my 4runner i cut off the lowest "ring"

My setup is OME 890 rear springs, trooper shocks, and front end links on the rear.

Total length of the cup and bumpstop is 5.5 inches

I'm looking on some junk yard parts sites and they don't list the bump stop. I scrolled through the list of parts you can search for on a 1999 Blazer and can't figure out what else it might be called, or what larger assembly it might be part of.

Here is the site:

When I look at other places it seems like there are a wide variety of AM bump stops, but most of them are TINY :shrug:

I had the same problem. Do you have any junkyards near you? I just called a local truck dismantling place and asked if they had any of the correct year Blazers or Jimmies, and they did so I went out and pulled them off myself. $15 later and I had my junkyard bump stops!

I drive by one every day. I'll just pull in and ask one day. I was hoping to do a search and find out ahead of time. I don't always like hanging out at the junkyard...
 
Not sure if you have any Pick N' Pulls
near you, but their website will search for you at as many locations within a certain distance you select. Then list the year and even what row / isle they sit at. Plus the ones by me also have a map in website So once I located the correct vehicles, I buzzed In N Out on my lunch break. Very quick and easy, and I have never been there!!
Just be aware though that these vehicles are going on 14-18 years old, and out of 6 possible Blazers at my location, it was tough to find a pair that were not dry rotting pretty bad. I found a decent pair and will see how they do.
Another great part is once they are mounted you can plug and play a different set with no tools;-)
They charged me $6.99 each, but by the time I paid Ca tax, $2 entry my total was $18ish. Still a good deal!!!!
Not much experience with junkyards, can you bargain with them???
Should have tried, since they didn't even know what they were.

Nothing, you'll use the bolt that comes off your 4runner again. Just make sure you also grab the bump stop retainer piece off the Blazer, I circled it in red in the below picture.

Have any of you fine gentleman cycled your suspension without springs too see how much these compress before holding full weight of the vehicle too see if they 'stop' the suspension before the shock bottoms out?
Of coarse this is dependent upon your particular shocks.
I know they are 5 1/2" long, but if they are allowing your shocks to over compress then they aren't fully doing there job. I agree that they are an easy cheap install, but have you determined if they are actually working correctly.
What I'm getting at is do they still need to be spaced down.
Obviously different lift heights / compressed shock measurements are going to affect this.
I notice most people have been cutting off the first hump.
 
Have a pair in the garage.
New suspension going on this weekend. Will try and document this.
Just want people too realize when using these that there are a lot of variables that need to be checked, and just slapping these on might not be the only step needed.
You need to determine if your particular setup needs further adjustments of spacing down further / or cutting shorter.
Can't wait to experiment!!!!

Cycling the suspension

I have not pulled the springs to check for actual compression of these on my personal setup. I do know, that what I have been able to generate by "statically" flexing out my rear suspension, they work in my particular setup to save the shock. Once I finally pull the trigger on some nice rear shocks, I plan to re-evaluate the length of my junkyard rear bump stops.

I was crawling around underneath my truck and noticed that with my 890 rear springs, the factory bumpstop that lives inside the coil will actually hit before my junkyard bumpstops (with the lower ring cut off). To me, this seems less than ideal, as the area that supports the coil springs and the "inner cone" doesn't seem substantial enough to handle a bumpstop, I would much rather use the main frame rail to handle that. I think I will likely cut a bit off of the inner cone bumpstop, to allow the junkyard bumps to be the first to impact

Like everything else, bumpstops require tuning!
 
Front Bump Stops

In an effort to continue with finding new useful junkyard mods I discovered a set of front bump stops that work well. After watching a video of the wheelers front bumps for second gen Tacoma's I had a picture in my mind of something similar seen at my local yard, next time I was there I found what I was looking for in the rear of a late 90's to early 2000's gm and chevy 1500's

Installation was slight more involved:

They come on the rear of the above mentioned vehicles with a cup and stud. You must press out the stud and remove the cup, then you are left with just the rubber bits...

Once that was done installation required drooping the front suspension and snaking the appropriate sized bolt down the hollow bumpstop.

Initially I noticed only a small increase in firmness, I plan on replacing the other front bumpstop with one of these as well, so that I will have these longer stops on the front and rear of the front control arm. This, along with limit straps is part of my plan to ditch the front sway bar.
