Driving style is the biggest factor. When I bought this 4Runner late 2011 my gas light would be on at like 280,but a new job with a long commute then the gas shortages when Hurricane Sandy made me change my style. No aggressive acceleration and keep cruising RPMs at 2500 or less (that's about 70 MPH). Leave for work at least 15 minutes earlier so you won't have to rush. Try sticking to those guidelines,but obviously you may need to accelerate or cruise faster for safety. Also my new work shift is at night with practically no traffic driving home (after 2 AM) so I do around 55-60,I'm in no rush...I believe this increased my mileage by at least 50 miles due to the lack of passing or braking/accelerating.
Tires inflated at least 35 PSI. Less rolling resistance. I check mine at every fuel-up since the station I frequent has free air.
Make sure engine is running at tip-top condition. Change oil and filter regularly (I do Mobil1 every 7500). Spark plugs (factory Denso or NGK),air filter (normal paper replacement) and PCV valve were replaced this spring. Fuel treatment at every oil change,usually Techron.

Pretty much highway. Round-trip commute is 10 miles suburban streets and 110 highway.
Going by Toyota's specs of a 18.5 gallon tank,I have 2 to 3 gallons left when the light turns on. I just poured in the contents of that gas container in and my light is off.

I too have adjusted they style in which I drive. And can see how this type of savings could add up over time. But, sometimes I like to hold second and third up to 3500 or just a tad more, just to feel that ol power range, it's hard to not throttle around with the 5-speed.

Sorry but this has to be fake. A 3rd gen cannot go 400 miles no matter how you do the math.
I noticed you never posted how many gallons went in when you finally filled up. How many gallons?

Call me a skeptic but it's not a smart ass comment any more than yours. Or perhaps I'm mistaking your comment lol ! (Straight downhill?)
Even if you used up 18 gallons which I don't think is possible that would still be 22.25 MPG for 400 straight miles on a vehicle rated at 15/17 (revised) city/hwy MPG.
There have been reports of super chargers making the MPG up above 20 but even then it's rarely claimed to be over 22 and for 400 miles distance.

I haven't filled it up. Before heading to work yesterday (Friday 8/1) afternoon I emptied the contents of that fuel container (almost 2.5 gals) then another $15 (4 gals and change) at a gas station right before the highway. I usually fill up near work because it's cheaper but skipped it this time. At 3:00 AM (Sat 8/2),after spending the last hour going over paperwork,I just wanted to go the eff home.
The gas light was on at 363.8 miles the last time I filled it up,I'll look for the receipt after I get some sleep. And there's numerous occasions where my light would turn on in the 330-340 range.
EDIT: last fillup 7/29,2:25 AM,QuickChek gas station I regularly use since it's a mile or so from work,right on the highway on my way home,light on @ 363.8 miles - 16.298 gallons.
265/70-16's,one of two OEM sizes. Speedometer is 2-3 miles "faster" than the satellite-based speedometer feature on my Alpine head unit,not a major difference.
Odometer isn't off. I reset the trip meter when I got the $15 + contents of the fuel container mentioned above. When I arrived home the trip was at 115.2 miles. After reading your comment I google mapped my exact route to/from work to verify the distance,and google shows 114.6 miles. Six tenths of a mile difference is pretty close,no?
And again let me reiterate now that I work nights my drive home is practically traffic free so I can cruise slow
I know there will be skeptics,I still can't believe how fuel efficient this truck is...some credit should also go to the skilled driver behind the wheel :naughty:

If you mean straight downhill,yes it's a fairly straight route and does have several downhill sections going home. I don't shut off the engine or any of that hyper mile-ing stuff though.

Let me throw my $.02 in here on the fuel mileage issue. I have an '02 Limited with a 2nd gen supercharger. I'm running factory sized tires, no added weight (armor) and the best I have seen for mileage is 21.6 mpg. That was driving from Flagstaff, AZ into New Mexico this past May after the Overland Expo. I routinely see 19 to 19.6 mpg here in the Colorado Springs area with my back and forth driving to work.

I can't speak for Ed's situation, but shortly after I bought my bone stock 1997 SR5 2WD 3.4/auto, with 16" wheels. I averaged just over 23 MPG on a trip from Phoenix to Fort Huachuca and back. I was driving around the speed limit (70-75 MPH) and it was a 1-day trip of about 500 miles.
Might sound like bullshit to some, but I've been chasing that MPG goal ever since. Been close on a few roadtrips, but never got over 22.5. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I got 23mpg when I had a bad coil... I didn't believe it myself, figured the trip meter was off but my mom verified it with the trip meter in her car

250k miles, new 265/75/16 AT tires, 5speed and I drive it like a grandpa I get about 16.5mpg and that's mostly city driving . I was happy because my lid 1996 ram 1500 with the 318 was averaging about 11mpg.
