3rd Gen Phone Mounting Solutions

Ram mount phone holder! I didn't come up with this idea but after trying several different type of phone holders I tried the Ram mount and never going back. You have to purchase everything separate because I could not find a kit that came with everything. But you get a ball mount that ram sells and take out one of the bolts the mount your driver said hand rail. Get a 1/2" longer bolt and then mount the ball mount using the longer bolt. I listed a link below that has all the details and the pictures are from the link. I do not have any recent pictures showing the new phone holder in my 4runner yet. I used the bottom bolt though and not the top one.

Do you all know where I can get a replacement magnet for that mount? I have the mount but when I traded my iphone 6 in I left the magnet on because it was too difficult to get off in store.

Nice ashtray mod, Skibber! I used an ashtray mod of sorts, too! Used a Scoche Magic magnet mount (https://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-MAGDMB-MagicMount-Universal-Devices/dp/B00I608BJ8) and had the whole thing secured to the face of the ashtray via screws to make sure that sucker stayed in place...which it did. BUT the dang ashtray slides open from the weight of the phone when it's on the mount...I'll be fixing that here shortly. In the meantime/between time, I rigged another, smaller, Scoche Magic mount to the face of that AWESOMELY UNUSABLE pull-out cupholder/UX design disaster - works like a charm even on really rough roads (don't off-road with this rig, mostly because it's MY body that can't take the hits! :dancin

*the 2nd pic is NOT supposed to be sideways but I can't seem to figure out how to rotate it in the editor for the page (it's oriented correctly when I view on my computer so...:noidea::noidea::noidea:

Thanks for that link man. I can't believe I didn't think of using the grab bar handle bolts. I can easily run a 6ft charging cable over there from my deck. I already have a small hole in that dash from where my wires come up to my trans temp gauge.

All that stuff is in my cart and I'll do the install this week. Then hit some hard, bouncy trails this weekend. I'll report back but it looks perfect.

As other people have said, I've always used a quality mount on the closest mount to the driver on the passenger side. The vents aren't very strong so in certain places my phone falls out, but it usually works.

I though i posted my photos. Here is my mount. That I was talking about.

This particular mount has little support legs that can fold and hold the phone sideways. It works great when off roading. The phone never falls of. I have the metal plate behind my iphone case and the magnet still holds it.

This is when you fold the legs.

And this is with the phone mounted. Notice the legs supporting the phone from falling down. Probably the best holder I ever had.

The idea of a mount near the handle. Its good, but i dont like it because i like my phone being plugged in and charging

Don't use any vent type mounts. The old plastic just shattered under the pressure... Don't ask how I know...

UPS delivered the ram mount and parts that [MENTION=132694]SCHUNTER1969[/MENTION] linked in post #41. Of course the wife has the truck and is late so I haven't got a chance to install yet. Playing with the mount it seems beyond bomber. My phone sticks no matter how hard I pull or push once it's in the cradle.

While ordering this stuff up from Amazon I came across another socket mount that has 2 holes to mount it. So I now have some options. I might go with the original idea of using the oh shit handle. I might use the other mount and put it closer to my deck. If my wife ever gets home I'll let you know where it went. lol

I use a Snap On Steelie ball and magnet to mount my phone. I love it. The magnet is super slim, and the camera isn't blocked when mounted so I can use it as a kind of dash cam if I want.

I used a Panavise dash mount combined with the Scosche magnet. The magnet is the same as the one that StreetCreeper used, held to the Panavise with a small nut/bolt. It provides a nice and sturdy mounting point with the convenience of easy removal with the magnet.

I've always wanted to buy this mount but $33 before shipping is STEEP!!!! its just a bent piece of metal with some holes in it....

I wish this wasn't so expensive!

It is on the pricey side. I think it looks pretty clean once installed but I'm sure that with enough patience and measurements it could be replicated for much cheaper.

Just finished my very own Ram mount bases, I've been working on this for a little while. Its pretty solid so far. Obviously, I still need to do some painting/finishing...
